It occured to me: According to the building card, the only effect of the most basic racetrack is "allows races to be held". When you upgrade it you would expect that it had some additional effect, for example a bonus to public order to representent that more people can watch more spectacular races. But no, even the Circus Maximus has "allows races to be held" as the only listed effect. Are there any hidden effects of the greater tracks that I am not aware of? If not, what possible reason other than role-playing could there be for building these upgrades?

Bug?

Edit: looked in the edb, the hippodrome and circus maximus offer stage races 2 as opposed to stage races 1, but I have no idea what that means. Also only the first level offers a public order due to happiness bonus.

Yeah I noticed that too, I guess they just haven't gotten around to putting in a juicy new bonus for upgrading from hippodrome to circvs maximvs.

It seems I misrembered: The basic track give 5% happiness bonus, Hippodromvs "allows races to be held" and Circus Maximus has no additional advantage. I believe a happiness bonus of at least 10% is in order.

I think we assume that "allows races to be held 2" is better than "allows races to be held 1", and that 3 is better than both. We can put the happiness back in though if there is nothing extra that is beneficial and being added.

It is better, it relates to frequency.

There is no three though. And I still think they should have minot public order bonuses, afterall, the population will be happy at the possibilty/anticipation of races, not just at the races themselves surely?

A larger complex can accomodate more spectators. Also, a bigger building gives the citizens some pride of them having a nice hippodrom and not only a dirty little racing track at the next hillside.

Sorry for crazy grammar.~:0

On the other hand, you'd also be getting the Antique equivalents of football hooligans wouldn't you ? I seem to recall reading racing fans could get pretty... unruly.

Yup, in any case races 3 is daily races, which is just absurd.

So you get years races and later monthly races.

Eh... Both the hippodrome and the circvs maximvs allow you to control how often you want races. It's like building an arena, that allows you to set how often you want games, and it doesn't change by upgrading to an amphitheatre etc.

The only difference there is that an amphitheatre has a larger passive public order bonus than an arena. But a circvs maximvs doesn't have a larger passive public order bonus than a hippodrome.

That is because the "circus_maximus" is not the "Circus Maximus". The Circus Maximus is the "hippodrome" level in the code. That's why the bonus doesn't appear to go up - it does actually, but it's because we reduced the levels that way in this complex. We retained it in the code though to keep from having any battle map problems.

Out of the timeframe, but I vaguely recall Justinian outlawing the entire sport alltogether after some particulary nasty riots.
