If Germany and France are allied and I am at war with France and I am Britain, I should be able with a diplomat to break the alliance via negotiations and become allied with Germany. Or, if France is no more, I should be able to ally with germany via this way.

I think this is a good idea because if I was allied with Scotland and I was a medium sized empire, I should be able to dump that alliance by asking Britain if they want to be allied with me instead - assuming they are at war with each other. This can happen in real life so I don't know why they left it out. Hell, you could do this in the original MTW if I remember right.

I´m not sure whether I get you right, basically you wish for a diplomatic option "break alliance with faction", am I right?

I agree, that would be very usefull, dito an option to negotiate a peace between two factions.

I don´t get the second part of your post, though. If you´re allied to one of two factions who are at war with each other, you can always send in a diplomat to end your alliance and then offer an alliance to the other faction, always assuming you´re their only ally (otherwise you might get caught up in the delicate web of inter-faction relations).

You mean you want to choose who you side with?

No, I think he wants to be able to negotiate a break in alliance (or a truce) between two AI factions.

The AI seems to do that all the time somehow, like when HRE attacked me, then allied with my ally Scotland on the same turn, i got the "truce has been declared" between me and HRE from him making us have Scotland in common......too bad it doesn't seem to work the other way around :wall:

Another couple of points:

alliances should mean something.

for example if your ally doesn't aid you (or you don't aid them) when one or t'other is being attacked by a third faction, then the faction being attacked should be able to end the alliance as it isn't doing anything useful.

(or maybe have defensive and offensive alliances. i.e If allied to a faction and that faction attacks another that you're not already at war with then they should be able to demand you join the attack actively or your alliance is at an end. Or if defensive if you don't aid a settlement being attacked before it capitulates thenn that would end the alliance.)

i believe the "offer attack on" option under diplomacy does this for about 15 turns, to some degree anyways. I've gotten the Pope to re-enforce one of my towns under siege by using it

You can get it to do that already. If you're using a mod or have unpacked your game files, find the "descr_campaign_ai_db.xml" file. Look for the line :

<trusted_ally_enemy_auto_war bool="false"/>

Change it to true. Save, exit, start a new campaign. Now every faction that is allied with you and falls in the category of Trusted Ally (that is : relations >= Very Good, their global reputation >= Reliable, your global reputation >= Reliable) will automatically and instantly declare war on your enemies. They'll auto-ceasefire with them when your war is over as well.
