OK who is the best plain old flat out rock band. I dont want any prog bands, speed metal, death metal. Just good old rock. Im even going to disqualify my favorite rock band the Who for venturing of course. So no Zep, no Floyd. No Sabbath. Heres my contenders

1 Aerosmith
2 AC/DC
3 Guns and Roses

Honorable mention to George Thorougood and the Destroyers amd the Motor city mad man Ted Nugent.

Best female rocker Joan Jett and the Blackhearts

PS f the Stones were to only do a set of their rockers they still may be able to claim the title as the worlds greatest rock band. However I havent liked anything theve put out in decades.

Why fight over tastes ?

Replace "fight" with what you'd like in case you find it too harsh for what is meant.

Not really my kind of music (I'm more of the "softer" rock, The Who or something. Or even more soft Boston, BTO, Queen.)

Guns N' Roses have 2 good songs imo, November Rain and Sweet Child o' Mine.

But I'm going for AC/DC, simply better

And (but this one doesn't belong here either) The Darkness makes some very entertaining music.

Heheh, I know. But they somehow seem more mild then something as Guns N' Roses.

And thats why i didnt put them on my list. If you want the best plain old rock band its the Who hands down. But their more than that so I left them out.

I got to like Dr. Feelgood (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaybV46MA6E) in the mid 70s, just before I discovered the 'joys' of punk rock. :sweatdrop:

Mind you this guy makes those wussies in Zep and Sabbath look like what they are....pink powder puffs! :laugh4:

The Supersuckers.

videos, see Rock and Roll Records (Ain't Selling This Year) (http://www.supersuckers.com/multimedia.htm)

Despite forays into country Eddie Spaghetti and crew still play straight from the balls rock that is short, fast, sarcastic, and loud. Songs all about Beer, sex, parties, sex, sin, drugs, and sex.

Pffft. No punk bands either lol.

Now this is what Im talkin about (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3mi-bKtDGA)

Heres something that backs up all I claim. The Who the world loudest rock band and the main staters of heavy rock

The Who Live at Leeds 2--BBC Look North (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHHToi3tAlg)

Commentary by Rick Wakeman. If you never heard this album and you like rock its a must. And remember this is 1970 but the Who had been playing many of these songs since 64. Even most of my friends used to ask how can you listen to that noise.

Ianofsmeg16
06-10-2007, 20:20
Bad Company/Free...basically Paul Rodgers

G 'N' R...you've gotta love them, even if Axl sounds like a Cat giving birth hehe

Where would you Classify Aerosmith?

Bruce. Springsteen. The Boss.

I agree Gawain, The Who are absolutly fantastic..and still going strong! i saw them live a couple of weeks ago and maaaan Won't get fooled again keeps me going all night haha (I'm still a devoted Floydaholic though ;))

EDIT: I just dug out my copy of Live at leeds...the word 'awesome' doesn't do them justice

Stig

The Who is the best yes, but if you can't class them Springsteen can't be classed either, however good he is. Yes it's rock, but no real hardrock. As I said with The Who, it's just Rock ... but damned good Rock.

Gawain of Orkeny

As I said with The Who, it's just Rock ... but damned good Rock.

Thats where we part. They also are a prog rock band. Listen to all the orchestration in Tommy and Quad though some of their best rockers are on those albums. I love the opening bass lines in "Doctor Jimmy". No one has the energy of the Who . I feel sorry for all of you who never got to see the original. I went to their 10th aniversary concert at Madison Sq Garden and its still the best concert Ive even been to. And talking about rockers as the Who themselves say

Long Live Rock

Down at the Astoria the scene was changing,
Bingo and rock were pushing out X-rating,
We were the first band to vomit in the bar,
And find the distance to the stage too far,
Meanwhile it's getting late at ten o'clock,
Rock is dead they say,
Long live rock.

Long live rock, I need it every night,
Long live rock, come on and join the line,
Long live rock, be it dead or alive.

People walk in sideways pretending that they're leaving,
We put on our makeup and work out all the lead-ins,
Jack is in the alley selling tickets made in Hong Kong,
Promoter's in the pay box wondering where the band's gone,
Back in the pub the governor stops the clock,
Rock is dead, they say,
Long live rock.

Long live rock, I need it every night,
Long live rock, come on and join the line,
Long live rock, be it dead or alive.

Landslide, rocks are falling,
Falling down 'round our very heads,
We tried but you were yawning,
Look again, rock is dead, rock is dead, rock is dead.

The place is really jumping to the high-watt amps,
'Til a 20-inch cymbal fell and cut the lamps,
In the blackout they dance right into the aisle,
And as the doors fly open even the promoter smiles,
Someone takes his pants off and the rafters knock,
Rock is dead, they say,
Long live rock, long live rock, long live rock.

Long live rock, long live rock, long live rock,
Long live rock, long live rock, long live rock.

Long live rock, I need it every night,
Long live rock, come on and join the line,
Long live rock, be it dead or alive.

They have some of the flat out coolest metal tunes of all time...better than any modern "music" by far, the Trooper man...THE TROOPER!

AC/DC are pretty damn good, and you asked for flat out rockers, you can't really get more flat out rock than them..

Look, I like Ray, he writes good tunes, but the father of punk is off base old mate. They were after all Mods (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mod_(lifestyle)), not rockers.

It's usually accepted that the New York Dolls, MC5, Lou Reed (and the Velvets), Iggy Pop amongst others help to create the genre.

Of course UK punk was very different to US/New York punk. Bands like the Pistols, the Clash et al had very little in common with Patti Smith, Tom Verlain, David Byrne etc.

I recall Richard Starkey being asked if he was a mod or a rocker, his reply?

Yes and the Who were Mods as well. The two are not mutually exclusive.
The Who as well can claim to be the fathers of Punk. You better check its roots. I didnt say they were punk bands, The difference is they can actually play their instruments and sing unlike Punks.

Listen to Father Christmas sometime. Listen to the bass lines.

@ Gawain,

Nope wrong again. The Who were definitely not considered progenitors of punk, in fact the Who, Kinks etc etc, were universally loathed by punks at the time, as being 'boring old farts'. Hence the story of Jagger having his nose broken by Lydon when he slammed a shop door in his face.

Put it another way. Punk was an attempt to go back to Rock 'n' Roll roots. No guitar solos, no fuzz or wah wah pedals, no prima donna axemen boring you to death with his onanistic fumblings.

Guys like Jerry Lee Lewis would prolly be more appropriate as a progenitor.

While they’ve stayed true to their garage-punk roots - think Ramones and Kinks

Curses swear by punk roots (http://theedge.bostonherald.com/musicNews/view.bg?articleid=1004100)

All you need do is listen to the music and the roots are clear. Again they werent Punk bands but they did inspire the early punkers as i imgine did Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground. Iggy pop and the Ramones were the first big real Punk rockers if thats what you driving at. Hey lets not leave out the MC5.

It's usually accepted that the New York Dolls, MC5, Lou Reed (and the Velvets), Iggy Pop amongst others help to create the genre.

I see at what your driving at Gawain. Three chord tricks, four members of the band, one lead singer. All that could be seen as 'influencing' punk. To some degree, but only because that's how rock and roll came about after the big band sound. Mainly down to the introduction of amplifiers.

Take it from me, as a punk from 76. The Who and all those really old guys, (over 30:laugh4: ) were derided and scoffed at.

Under no circumstances mention The Jam. :wall: :whip:

Spinal Tap - Break Like the Wind

We are the children who grew too fast
We are the dust of a future past
We raise our voices in the night
Crying to heaven
And will our voices be heard
Or will they Break Like The Wind
We are the footprints across the sands
We are the thumb on a stranger's hand
We made a promise in the night
Swearing to heaven Is this a promise we keep
Or one we Break Like The Wind
Hey!
We are the guests who have stayed too long
We are the end of the endless song
We send our hearts into the night
Soaring to heaven
And will out hearts still beat on
Or will they Break Like The Wind
Ooh, Break Like The Wind.

"It's a song about training dogs."

You been bad
Don't do what I say.
You don't listen.
And you never obey.
Try to teach you.
But you just won't be good.
You won't behave the way
A big girl should.
It's time to give the whip a crack.
I'm gonna have to send you back to
Bitch School.
Bitch School.
You're a beauty.
You're the best of your breed.
You're a handful.
And I know what you need.
You need training.
Gonna bring you to heel.
I'm gonna break you with my will of steel.
Discipline's my middle name.
And no one comes back the same from
Bitch School.
Bitch School.
No more sniffling strangers, or running free at night.
You think my bark's bad, honey - wait till you feel my bite.
You got problems.
You whine and you beg.
When I'm busy,
You wanna dance with my leg.
I'm gonna chain you.
Make you sleep out of doors.
You're so fetching when you're down on all fours.
And when you hear your master,
You will come a little faster, thanks to
Bitch School.

Wrong. Check out Ride On from the Dirty Deeds Done Dirt cheap album. Great song, but I bet they've never played it live!

Well, they haven't made ballads anyone has heard of. For example, if you put on guns n' roses at a party, there's always an idiot who wants to listen to sweet child of mine, knockin' on heavens door or don't cry. If you put on AC/DC, people will only want to hear thunderstruck, highway to hell, hail cæsar, shoot to thrill, etc etc...

Agreed although I don't have really any favorites from AC/DC except for
"Back In Black"(Oakland Raider Fan). But I agree Aerosmith is a bit underrated and somewhat over looked because(from what I can tell anyways) they are usually compared to The Rolling Stones.

But I agree Aerosmith is a bit underrated and somewhat over looked because(from what I can tell anyways) they are usually compared to The Rolling Stones.

Must be Steven Tyler's lips.:laugh4:

The big difference being that they started a few years later but continued to produce great records into the next century. The stones ran out of gas in the early 80s and IMO are still living on their rep. However again. If you were to have a Band put together say a 20 or 25 song set of their best rockers the Stones are still hard to beat. Their 60's and 70's stuff rocked the house.

Aerosmith, who have been performing as the original lineup for the past 23 years, have sold 150 million albums worldwide, 65.5 million albums in the United States alone, making them the bestselling American hard rock band of all time.[5] They also hold the record for the most gold, platinum, and multi-platinum albums by an American group.[6] The band has scored 27 Top 40 hits on multiple charts around the world, nine #1 Mainstream Rock hits, four Grammy awards, and ten Video Music Awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. They continue to tour and average one million dollars a show.[7] Their musical evolution over the years has made them major innovators in American hard rock, pop, glam, blues, and rap, and has inspired legions of rock artists that came after them. Their numerous contributions to other forms of media have further solidified their status as pop culture icons.
The band has a loyal fanbase numbering over a million worldwide, known as the Blue Army, that has equally spanned the last three generations.[11] Aerosmith's longevity, durability, and adaptability have allowed them to sustain high levels of popularity, acclaim, and success for the better part of the 37 years they have been active.

AC/DC have sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, including more than 68 million albums in the U.S.[5] Back in Black has sold 42 million units worldwide, including 21 million in the U.S.,[6] making it the second-highest-selling album ever internationally, and the biggest-selling album by any band.[7] The band are ranked fourth on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.[8]

Brian Johnson (left) singing with Aerosmith's Steven Tyler in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

AC/DC were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2003. During the ceremony the band performed "Highway to Hell" and "You Shook Me All Night Long", with guest vocals provided by host Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. He described the band's power chords as "the thunder from down under that gives you the second-most-powerful surge that can flow through your body."[55]

Its a tuff choice and I cant see how Aerosmith is being so totally ignored here. Most of AC/DCs thunder comes from Back in Black.

It is kind of funny how they managed to sell 5 million more records here than Aerosmith who is by this account the top selling band in US history. This however would mean the Aerosmith has sold more records around the rest of the world.

Now on to my claim that the Who invented hard rock

Marshall Stacks

In the early and mid 1960s, Pete Townshend and John Entwistle were directly responsible for the creation and widespread use of stacked Marshall cabinets. Townshend later remarked that John started using Marshall Stacks in order to hear himself over Keith Moon's drums, and Pete himself also had to use them just to be heard over John.

In fact, the very first 100 watt Marshall amplifiers (called "Superleads") were created specifically for Entwistle and Townshend when they were looking to replace some equipment which had been stolen from them. Prior to the theft they were each using 50 watt amplifiers, Entwistle was using a Marshall JTM45 and Townshend had a Fender Bassman.

They approached Jim Marshall asking if it would be possible for him to make their new rigs more powerful than those they had lost, to which they were told that the speaker cabinets would have to double in size. They agreed and six rigs of this prototype were manufactured, of which two each were given to Townshend and Entwistle and one each to Ronnie Lane and Steve Marriott of The Small Faces. These new "double" cabinets proved too heavy and awkward to be transported practically, so The Who returned to Marshall asking if they could be cut in half and stacked, and although the double cabinets were left intact, the existing single cabinet models were modified for stacking, and has become the standard over the years. Due to the urgency of the situation, the amplifiers were simply modified versions of the existing 50 watt JTM45 model with the output valves doubled, and were thus named the JTM45-100.
Entwistle and Townshend both continued expanding and experimenting with their rigs, until (at a time when most bands still used 50–100W amplifiers with single cabinets) they were both using twin Stacks, with each Stack being driven by new experimental prototype 200W amplifiers (nicknamed "Pigs" for their extra grunt). This, in turn, also had a strong influence on the band's contemporaries at the time, with Cream and The Jimi Hendrix Experience both following suit. However, due to the cost of transport, The Who could not afford to take their full rigs with them for their earliest overseas tours; thus, Cream and Hendrix were the first to be seen to use this setup on a wide scale, particularly in America and London.

Ironically, although The Who pioneered and directly contributed to the development of the "classic" Marshall sound and setup with their equipment being built/tweaked to their personal specifications, by the time they could afford to transport their equipment overseas a couple of years later, they had stopped using Marshalls and moved on to Sound City (Hiwatt) equipment. Cream and particularly Hendrix would be widely miscredited with the invention of Marshall Stacks.[2][
Sound City and the invention of Hiwatt amplifiers

John Entwistle traded in his Marshall Stacks in favour of Sound City at the beginning of 1967, and Townshend followed later that year.

Around this time, Jimi Hendrix and his manager Chas Chandler approached Townshend asking for his opinion on amplification. He told them that he had stopped using Marshall as he thought Sound City were better. The Jimi Hendrix Experience subsequently started using Sound City rigs, but set them up together with their Marshall Stacks instead of replacing them. Cream also used Sound City alongside their Marshalls for their final "farewell" tour in 1968.

In late 1968 The Who approached Dallas Arbiter, the makers of Sound City, asking if their equipment could be modified slightly. This request was denied, but independent amp designer/manufacturer Dave Reeves, a former employee of Sound City, agreed and created customised Sound City L100 amplifiers under the name Hylight Electronics. This model was named the Hiwatt DR103, which would be modified in 1970 into the CP103 "Super Who 100" model which Townshend used almost exclusively for over a decade. In 1973 the updated DR103W model was created, which has been the central piece of equipment around which Townshend's various rigs have been built for the past thirty years.[3][4]

The use of Hiwatt amplifiers would later also be adopted by many rock guitarists, including David Gilmour of Pink Floyd and Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam.

Well both have numerous greatest hit albums or are you looking for their best individual albums? For instance early Stone albums have tons of great stuff you will never see on those GH albums and the same for Aerosmith.

For Aerosmith Id go with Toys in the Attic,Pump and Get a Grip for starts.

It was 1975's Toys in the Attic, however, that established Aerosmith as international stars competing with the likes of Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones. Originally derided as Rolling Stones knockoffs, Toys in the Attic showed that Aerosmith was a talented band in their own right, incorporating elements of blues, glam rock, heavy metal, punk music, psychedelia, and pop. Toys in the Attic was an immediate success, starting with the single "Sweet Emotion", which became the band's first Top 40 hit. This was followed by a successful re-release of "Dream On" which hit #6, becoming their best charting single of the 1970s. The 2nd song from the album, "Walk This Way", reached the Top 10 in early 1977.

1. Toys in the Attic
2. Uncle Salty
3. Adam's Apple

Best blues based band ever. Yes better than Zep. I remember when Clapton was touted as God:laugh4: Its still his best work IMO.

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.jctroy.com/Artists/Clapton%2520is%2520God.jpg&imgrefurl=http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm%3Ffuseaction%3Duser.viewprofile%26friendid%3D7017787&h=900&w=900&sz=47&tbnid=qAh-4IMYtZTjZM:&tbnh=146&tbnw=146&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dclapton%2Bis%2Bgod%26um%3D1&start=1&sa=X&oi=images&ct=image&cd=1

The phrase “Clapton is God” originated during Eric’s tenure with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. Eric was a member of the Bluesbreakers from April to late August 1965 and again from November 1965 to July 1966.

It was during this time that Eric first rose to prominence in the burgeoning British Blues scene. The phrase “Clapton is God” was spray painted on a wall in the Underground station in Islington in the mid-60s by an admirer. Islington is one of the many boroughs of the greater London Area.

The graffiti was captured in a now-famous photograph. Helped by the photo, the legend grew. It is now commonly believed that graffiti proclaiming “Clapton is God” could be seen all over the walls of the London Underground system during the mid- to late-60s. This was definitely not the case!

Another great band.

Im sorry but Zep is a blues based band that rocks and thats why they are not included here. Most of their stuff is blues covers or at least based on the blues though they did manage to incorporate many other types of music in their catalog.

Heres A list of some of the songs Zep stole from other artists:

* "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" - A folk song by Anne Bredon, this was originally credited as "traditional, arranged by Jimmy Page," then "words and music by Jimmy Page," and then, following legal action, "Bredon/Page/Plant."
* "Black Mountain Side" - uncredited version of a traditional folk tune previously recorded by Bert Jansch.
* "Bring It On Home" - the first section is an uncredited cover of the Willie Dixon tune (as performed by the imposter Sonny Boy Williamson).
* "Communication Breakdown" - apparently derived from Eddie Cochran's "Nervous Breakdown."
* "Custard Pie" - uncredited cover of Bukka White's "Shake 'Em On Down," with lyrics from Sleepy John Estes's "Drop Down Daddy."
* "Dazed And Confused" - uncredited cover of the Jake Holmes song (see The Above Ground Sound Of Jake Holmes).
* "Hats Off To (Roy) Harper" - uncredited version of Bukka White's "Shake 'Em On Down."
* "How Many More Times" - Part one is an uncredited cover of the Howlin' Wolf song (available on numerous compilations). Part two is an uncredited cover of Albert King's "The Hunter."
* "In My Time Of Dying" - uncredited cover of the traditional song (as heard on Bob Dylan's debut).
* "The Lemon Song" - uncredited cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" - Wolf's publisher sued Zeppelin in the early 70s and settled out of court.
* "Moby Dick" - written and first recorded by Sleepy John Estes under the title "The Girl I Love," and later covered by Bobby Parker.
* "Nobody's Fault But Mine" - uncredited cover of the Blind Willie Johnson blues.
* "Since I've Been Lovin' You" - lyrics are the same as Moby Grape's "Never," though the music isn't similar.
* "Stairway To Heaven" - the main guitar line is apparently from "Taurus" by Spirit.
* "White Summer" - uncredited cover of Davey Graham's "She Moved Through The Fair."
* "Whole Lotta Love" - lyrics are from the Willie Dixon blues "You Need Love."

This does not include the songs that they did give credit to the artist on like ,You Shook Me (Willie Dixon), I Can't Quit You Baby (Willie Dixon), and We're Gonna Groove (Ben E. King/James Bethea) to name a few.

As I cannot guess what your definition of flat out Rockers is, I will have to pass on this one. It's hard to understand Led Zeppelin not qualifying. And as far as I'm concerned, Joan Jett was a flash-in-the-pan pop rock wannabe. I think you're trying to control the playing field a bit too much.

Heh ... kinda like desert terrain, over and over again, with practically the same range-laden armies, lol. Peace, my friend, that was offered with my tongue in cheek.

Go to post 51. Cream doesnt qualify either. I want a more pure rock sound.

They dont come any more pure rock than that.

Heres one on my favorite ever pure rock songs

Quiet Riot - Cum On Feel The Noize (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KW2J_UZ8lQU)

I cant stay sitting and listen to that. I gotta get up and jump around.

Flat out rockers? Hellacopters, from Sweden... "By the grace of God" is a fantastic "flat out rock" album.
