View Full Version : Random Map option
I think this would be a really good idea if they could implement it?
Would be kool for MP and would test many skills on different maps..Also meaning u must take a balanced army.
This would surely be easy to add?
This way many ppl would join games and enjoy most maps available..also be good for comp games?maybe http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
You mean selecting a random map from the list of available maps?
OR
Creating a random terrain map on the spot for use with the battle?
The latter seems impossible given PCs can't sync stats...
Konnichiwa,
The latter does seem possible. SOF2 has it. If I recall right C&C Tiberium Sun did it (years ago).
Generate a random map on the host machine and send it to the joiners (maps are less than 100 kb) so this shouldn't be a problem.
You 'can't' expect it to be as nice as Vanyasake though.

What would us map makers do then? Leave things the way they are please. As far as maps are concerned I don't think you can beat the present set up.

If there were a random map generating option it should be possible to save it- the monkey on the typewriter sometimes produces a Vanyasake beater.

Hmmm. I remember F-Zero X on N64 had a very nice trtack generator. Anyway l don't think it will be fun nor the PC generate such cool maps. I just want the map editor to be even better and more powerful than the MI editor so that the map-makers can build even better maps.

I cannot return l presume so l will keep my name among those who are dead by bows!
Something i have never tried(Mapbuilding)?
Maybe it will be fun if FasT tries..well i'll wait and see what MTW brings?
Konnichiwa,
Soldier of Fortune2 is just released. It's a modern First Person Shooter. It generates maps, but those maps are not as nice as maps made by a human. Isn't the bare and flat Ironing Board the most played map online?
Even if a nice computer generated map is made, humans can make 10 other nice ones. If Kraellin makes 10 nice maps, does that mean that Vanya even doesn't have to try to make 1?
In fact, STW MI/WE already generates random maps: the map editor does that. All it 'needs' are some textures and trees to spice it up. Actually, some maps available for download, are clearly maps randomly generated by the editor and textured (to some extend) by the author.
The benefit of a random generated map is that none of the players will know where they'll fight: another challenge.
I think it's a good and viable suggestion.

That is my point Tosa..Challenge and fun not knowing where u shall battle.
Would be a fun option i think?Well IMO i would really like it,also it would improve ur own skill as well http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

But it would give so much food for lamerz...
Ok Dude.. let's do a random!!! (Hmmmm... I don't like it, he can camp better than I can... wERs dA EsC bUtTOn..?)
Personally I would rather stick to good Maps that come with the game, and the result of the work of the map makers.

good lamerz will always find a way to be lame. Better they quit at the beginning than 17 seconds prior to you crushing their hatamoto.
Konnichiwa Erado san,
Should 'sane' people be limited in their fun because of 'lamers'?
It can be done, in fact, STW WE/Mi already does it.

While I can see and appreciate the points raised for random maps, what happens to unit choice? Would you include a map description with the random map so you can select units to suit? If this was not available I think it would lead to 'standard armies' being used.
Would these maps be as imaginative or beautiful? I doubt it.
Most if not all generals surveyed or had information about their chosen battlefield.
I would like to see a greater choice of textures and trees, models but I think this will be the case, so I am happy.

Konnichiwa Orda Khan,
It's very unlikely that computer generated maps will be as 'good' as ones created by a human.
TW games attract many different people having many different 'needs'. One of those 'needs' is competition and challenge. Random maps would be a perfect option for some of them.
One thing doesn't exclude nor replace the other.
About unitsselection: you could show a preview of the map to give an idea of the terrain. You could also know nothing about it and be 'forced' to pick a balanced army or gamble. Seems we have another option here, thanks for the nice suggestion Orda Khan.
MTW offers three sets of textures: Desert, Lush and Arid, each having 170 different textures.
Even nicer is that textures are now normal TGA files and can thus be edited with a normal paintapplication. I wrote some text in Red capitals and painted something on one of the textures. I could see the new texture in the map, not blurred but exactely as it was made.
I guess it would be a small step to allow adding more directories (more groups of textures). Thus an author can not only make maps, he can make his own textures too, and players could add these without deleting/overwriting existing ones.
Two other nice things can be seen in the Jaffa battle map. The water in the sea moves and sound is attached to the sea as well!
Magyar might accuse me of hyping now, but MTW is very promissing.
