I'd like to play Golden Horde if you are able to. First I plan to gain control of the Russian vassal states, destroy Novogrod as a warning and then mass to invade Europe.
Otherwise I'd prob play a force under Saladin. My tactic, kick the crusaders back were they came from.

The Danes, of Course http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
Then I have to check out those longbows....
I will probably never try out the crusades though ( camels does nothing for me http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif )...
Holy Roman Empire first, cos I loved Teutonic Knights in the Age of Empires 2, so why not in M:TW! Then maybe English..
alKo, think you're on the wrong track,
TeutonicKnights belong to German faction only, and while they kicked ass in AOE2, Lancers and LateRoyalKnights are the best.
ChivalricFootKnights will also be kings in MTW due to their anti cavalry bonus.

Nein, alKO is on the right track!
The Holy Roman Empire and Germany are the same. You wouldn't believe that, would you?
I am most looking forward to playing The Germans, not so much for patriotic reasons but to begin my personal Baltic Campaign. I simply love to play the Teutonic Order, conquer the coast of the Baltic Sea and kick some Polish and Russian ass (plz. take no offense).
Well yes Romans did conquer Germany, but in this case Germans are a seperate faction from Italian.
You could of course play as Italians and conquer German faction to gain Teutonic knights.
Common confusion is at work here. The Holy Roman Empire is not the same as the Roman Empire. In the MTW period, the Holy Roman Empire was indeed, essentially, Germany, all ultimately to do with being a successor state to Charlemagne's empire. Charlemagne was aware of the ancient Roman precedent alright, but there is no direct link between the ancient Romans and the HRE.

Ya can play with irish units with a bribe or take over their land, then make irish units of your own.
How does civil war work in MTW?
In a civil war, you get to choose a side and fight for control of your kingdom, it is prob. best to choose side with most troops.
I will choose england to try and fill battle fields with many archers. (longbows)

Sorry alKo seems my Roman history ain't up to scratch.
HRE get Teutonic Knights, but they ain't the best like in AOE2.
Bohemond and Hulegu thanks for info.
Can't believe the Germans would call themselves HRE, they must have been mad.

i cant wait to play the game , doesnt matter with wich faction; but i think i`ll start with the byzantines or the almohad ( not sure yet )
MOngols if I can, but if not, Germans 'cause it will be a challenge defending 4 fronts aginst the French, Danes, Italians and the Mongols eventually (they'll probably decimate every faction near them at the start) And Teutonic Knights!! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
Italians look interesting too. As do the Turks...

So that means that if the English conquer Scotland and a civil war erupts you can choose the side of the Scots or the English.

Indeed it is very strange. I think it was because it gave their rulers a righteous claim to be Emperor, not only King. This was a big difference!
The only people besides the Pope that could grant a Crown to somebody were the two Emperors (Byzantinum and HRE or East and West-Rome). Being the official heirs of the Roman Empire also meant a claim to all their former glory. But at this time Roman power was already diminishing, as can be seen in the eventual downfall of Byzantinum and the slow but inevitable dissolving of the HRE. Btw the full name I know from Literature would be more something like "Holy Roman Empire of German Nationality".

Yes theForce! Long live Byzantium! I wonder if you can sieg the walls of Constantinople? It is a provincein the game...
Emp. Conralius

It's gonna be fun just to fight the Mongols. Once you conquer the provinces they once held around Russia, you should be able to create Golden Horde Warriors, Golden Horde Cavalry, Steppe Cavalry, etc...

The germans were granted the title of HRE because they were loyal to the pope and basically the pope wanted someone to protect him.

Oh how many enemies died at the walls of Constantinople. The city was very well protected by the well designed walls of the city. Turks managed to penertate em with a big cannon Moameth the 2nd created.
I really think that they must make bigger walls for this one cause it was a pain to assult.
Anyway Byantium will be really hard cause everyone used to attack it.

At first I thought this was about which faction you looked forward to typing... Byzantium's decadent halls are my thing. Perhaps the game will represent the 4th crusade where the latins and venetians sacked the city twice over, ostensibly on their way to the holy land, but never quite got around to fighting any muslims.

I actually read a book about the fall of Constantinople. Evidently, a Greek scientist invented a huge siege cannon. After being presented to Mehmet II, 2 all together were built, and about 68 smaller ones. After 6 weeks the walls fell and jannisaries spearheaded the final assault on the greatest city in Europe. Once the Byzantine cause became too desperate, the emperor himself jumped into the fray unarmed and was hacked into pieces. The, of course, Hehmet II renmed the city Istanbul, which in Greek means "Inner City" or "In the City." Just a lil history lesson there. If ya don't already know, I'm with the half of the Roman Empire that outlasted i's prodesessor for 1000 years!

DrNo, I didn't think that the Teutonic Knights would be the best units in M:TW, I just like them so much =). I also like The Templars and Hospitallers, but I really don't know their nationality and which factions get to create them..

Since the Danes/Vikings were so pivital around 500AD-1100AD, wouldn't they be an Early Era civ. Instead, they show up in the High and Late eras, where they converted to Christianity and lost their fighting edge!
Regarding the HRE, the joke was that it was neither holy, Roman, or an empire http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif As for its history, Charlemagne conquered much of the former Western Roman Empire (Gaul, Switerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and parts of Spain, Germany, and Italy. Because of this and his support of the Pope's position in Italy, the Pope crowned him Holy Emperor of the Romans in 800AD. Upon his death his empire was divided among his three sons. The western portion became France, the eastern portion (Germany) became the HRE (subsequent dynasties claimed his title as Emperor) and the middle section became a battleground between the other two.

After Byzantium got so big it's own greatness was the cause of it's fall in conjuction with bad rulers 11-14th century.
Byzantium had many enemies and the most ruthless was the pope. Wanting to bring the Orthodox under his own power did nothing to help the city under siege.
I hope the map designers really take into consideration of how the city was fortified!
The city was protected by natural barriers and where not there was a three-wall network and the city itself could support 1 million people. Those walls are probably the most sieged walls ever in history.
In 1453, month May 200.000 surrounded the city. Defenders were 10.000 and managed to hold out for 7 weeks.
Indeed the emperor charged in battle and prayed that there was a Greek soldier there to kill him either then the enemy. The interesting thing is that they never found his body.
Byzantines fascinate me. They will be the most attacked in the game!

HERE HERE the Force!!!! I too am deeply facinated by the Byzantines! Constantinople itself was based, like you said, on a great natural foundation. The walls of the great city were 20-30ft thick! And the fortifications were based on 7 hills, just like Rome! Here's a post I put up earlier for some insight about the city:
I actually read a book about the fall of Constantinople. Evidently, a Greek scientist invented a huge siege cannon. I can't wait to play as Zerg!!!!!!!
As far as I know every Catholic fraction will be able to produce Templars and Hospitallers with appropriate building(s) or event(s).
I do hope the game makes Constantinople unique and reallistic, but I doubt that. The city was huge (I think to huge for the map) and right next to the water. Meaning that city must be sieged both by sea and land. Otherwise the supplies will come through (by sea or by land) and the siege will last forever.

I am the law and you can't beat the law.
Well as suggested, if they can do the Byzantines and Constantinople correct, I have no fear of any other aspect of MTW.

That looks correct. Templars can be built only if you have Jerusalem. Hospitallers you need Malta!
Well, not to sound like a "me too" post, but I gotta go with a lot of other people here and say I'll be playing as the Byzantines first--although I'm very tempted by France as well! After those two I'll probably try out the Danes.
It might sound lame but i just want to play all of them...they are all so cool that none really stand up head and shoulders above the rest for me.
Although i might try and find my niche with one in Multiplayer.

The Turks sieged the city from the sea (Bosporos channel). I don't wanna go to siege the city with the same walls as ohter minor cities or it will be silly if the city is located in the middle of a valley.
Those details are those that are gonna make the game shine.

I seriously doubt they could recreate the ENTIRE city. It would be far too big! Maybe they'll make a series of hills (7) and make it lead to the massive walls. Thats about all the can do. Even if the maps are 4X larger, thy can't fit a city about the size of New York on a map. Craetive Assembly really has their work cut out for them! But I'm pretty sure threir already done with it, since the game ships at the end of next month.
