View Full Version : When was the most inconvient time for your faction leader to die?
I was recently playing as the spainards. My leader Lucco Decided To join in a siege of some gaulish town. Unfortunatly He died a turn after Getting there.I was Able to win the Battle though because the gauls seem to have a problem with Sallying.(1 unit at a time doesnt work)
Though Im sure some people have had worse experiences.

Playing the Brutti a couple of months ago my faction leader was pushing 65 years old so I figured that a junior general might benefit from some additional retinue from the old geezer. It took three turns for the junior general to travel to him and the old geezer died before the junior general could get there. Not a total tragedy but it did cause some unrest in that city that required lowering of taxes and the building of an arena to compensate for the loss of an effective leader. The moral of the story - plan in advance -start transfering retinue people before the old geezers reach 65.

I'm playing as Macedon and in the process of conquering Italy. Currently there are only two generals on the peninsula - my old geezer faction leader and another, younger guy. I send younger guy and his army off to Northern Italy to kill some Julii and Gauls. Meanwhile, I figure I'm going to give my FL some final glory and have him conquer Rome itself before he keels.
Long story short, he begins the siege. It's gonna take a couple of turns to build the equipment and it looks like the SPQR is going to attack first.
Next turn, he dies and my army is left without their 8-or-9-star general/king and attacked by the big SPQR army, garrison of Rome, AND a decent-sized Julii force. Argh.
I've had excellent generals die, leaving their elite army in the command of a 20-year old nimcompoop, who goes and gets it destroyed :( But by far the most annoying untimely death ever was actually in the original MTW...
I was playing as the good old English, and had conquered the entire map apart from five or so provinces... when my King died. This was such a big problem because, in MTW, the king's influence and traits affect the loyalty of all the provinces in the empire. So when my King died and was replaced by a wimpish, non-influential heir, my entire russian empire revolted, which started a full scale civil war, shattered my thinly stretched empire and resulted in the total collapse of everything to the rebels. And only a few turns from victory! If only he could have hung on just a bit longer...
I still get pissed off at the thought of it :P
