View Full Version : Never again

Last night was the local english radio station, WRG's, stand up comedy night, with four stand-up comedians from the Comedy Store in London flown over for our amusement. A friend won two tickets so we went along together. Once we got there, we were offered a whole crate (24 cans) of free beer (Carlsberg) if we would sit in the front row. Of course, that turned out to be the row where everyone got insulted (I shall not bore you with the comments made about yours truly). The comics were great, but the free beer was, well, greater. Together we had 12 beers (0.5 liter) between us. And by God, was it a hard job to get back to the bus afterwards: I was completely blotto, waving at people I didn't even know, grinning like a mad Cheshire cat. I got home all right, but before long I had my head over a toilet bowl and this morning my insides feel as though they were scrambled with an egg whisk. In view of this, I have vowed never to drink that much beer again.
Has anyone else had some rough nights and made similar promises?

Don't worry, your resolve will only last until you're thirsty again ~D
I think I've probably stopped drinking even more times than I've quit smoking. But yeah, Carlsberg hangovers can be a bit rough.... :skull:

oh god yes
i mean...it went from best night to worst night ever in (what seems like) 30 seconds
Any time you get offered free beer, you take it. You never know when it will be the last time it happens.

Hang on, you had twelve beers between you? Six each?
I think you need some more practice.

24 between them, 12 each ~;)

Each half a litre. 6 litres...I would be clinically dead and would vow no more.

Several times, but never off beer (certainly not Carlsberg). Generally a bottle (0.7cl) Famous Grouse...

I took that to mean they drank twelve beers between the two of them. I could be wrong of course.

I have repeatedly made vows to such an affect. And no, they don't last.
Hell, I'm posting on this website right now for the first time after about two years while semi-drunk (I suddenly remembered what my password was and thought I'd log in while I remembered).
I have never promised not to drink again and, God willing, I will never will.
Fortunately, if I get truly drunk, I am sick for days and days. I can't remember the last time I got drunk, could be a good ten years. However, last Christmas my buddy's dad and I put a very serious dent in a bottle of 15 year-old scotch, but I can handle whisky better than beer.
(I say fortunately because alcoholism runs in my family so I'm happy not to be be able to be a heavy drinker.)

This. :laugh4: Getting schnockered with your mates every so often is good for the soul, though not so good for your liver.

Thought so too initially, but then I figured I misread it as 6 beer isn't enough to get one drunk - let alone that drunk.

We did actually have 6 beers each, which came to 3 liters. That may not be a lot to the seasoned drinkers of the org, but personally I find that it is much easier to get drunk on beer rather than hard alcohol (I drunk half a bottle of southern comfort once and was nowhere near in such a state). It must be the bubbles.
I prefer vodka over beer.
But I don't drunk often anyway, when I do, vodka tastes better IMO, I don't need to pee as often and once my stomach felt very weird after only two 0.5l beers, and evening with lots of vodka was more enjoyable. And no, never puked or lost conscious anyway.

Agreed. ~;)
But yes I've had some rough mornings trying to complete essays after drinking much Vodka, Jager, and beer the night before.

Well, 3 liters of un 3.5° budweiser wouldn't kill anybody, but if it's 8° Aventinus....
Not to derail the thread, but what does everyone consider alot of alcohol?

Depends how old you are. When I was younger I had the stomach of a concrete elephant (thank you Blackadder). Now unfortunately five pints of strongish ale is enough to guarantee a mild hangover in the morning, with the sererity of the hangover increasing exponentially as pints rise above five. (often without the fun of being drunk the night before alas). Happily a session beer doesn't have the same effect so its a couple of pints of spitfire then onto masterbrew for me. (The crossover point is a moment of great danger, because if by some evil chance a third pint of Spitfire arrives, eg if a round is got in when you are distracted, then obviously it will be drunk, whereupon any chance of having the willpower to switch to a session beer is lost, and the evening may end in singing and a kebab.)

You should switch to actual beer, that doesn't have any bubbles.
I would say that I consider 8 pints or the equivalent to be "a lot". However, I don't get hung-over if I stick to beer, only if I start drinking wine/spirits as well.
It depends how much time I drink it over as well. If I've started at six and drink through until twelve, 8 pints isn't really that much.

Gah! Vodka bad! Vodka bring pain (so *much* pain)!
Well I'm a lightweight thanks to a medical condition, so for me 4-5 beers (assuming I'm not spacing them out, of course) is enough to get me pretty buzzed. It's admittedly a tad embarrassing, but there is something to be said for being a cheap drunk -- it takes me a while to run out of alcohol. ~D

I used to consider it non-casual drinking (what i'd drink on a standard night) if i went over 10 beers (25cl) of 5°. A lot would be 15-20 beers i'd think. I once (nearly ?) made it to 30, but that actually puts you at risk of going into coma I believe, don't do that.

A lot for me depends on the substance. A lot of hard liquor (and yes, being part-Irish, I am a whisk(e)y drinker... Bourbon, though, as per affordability/taste) for me is about a pint, at which point I experience visual distortions. A lot of beer, on the other hand, is about eight 12-oz bottles of Icehouse. I get so freakin' hammered on beer... part of the reason I don't like it. Frankly, the best drink for me is a good bourbon and water.
As for promises... I don't lie to myself, so I don't promise never to drink again, or drink a certain quantity, ever, except if I know it was literally too much. Usually, I just vow to never premix beer and bourbon (nastiest-tasting concoction ever) or never to forget to drink lots of water. Those usually last longer.

Does everyone in Belgium drink 25cl measures? A pint (just over 50 cl) is more common here. I'd probably get laughed at by my friends if I started drinking halves.

Yeah, we have 33cl too but they're not as popular.

A pint is 56,7 cl. Or 56,8 cl.
(important, 'cause 6 pints is closer to 3,5l than 3l !)
Sooo. From what I remember from my time in Scotland, everything was going fine for me up to 5-6 pints, "hangoverish" afterwards.
I had the stomach of a concrete elephant
Lucky for me I'm at the age where that is true. Not to mention the fact I come from a long line of coal miners, Irishmen, soldiers and adventurers. So, not to sound pretentious, it does take alot of alcohol to get me even mildly tipsy. Like a party I was at a number of weeks ago I had 10 beers (5°-9°), half a beer bottle's worth of vodka and a couple Jagerbombs and I was only just getting a slight buzz.
Also Aussie beer is absolutely rubbish, except Tooheys Extra Dry and Coopers.
Looks like most of you can really hold your alcohol.
I was pretty drunk the last time I had two liters of some pretty good German light beer. It was a good drunk though, not the kind of drunk where you puke.
Edit:
And yes, the first time was horrible. I was with 3 of my friends in my friend's basement and we were pounding vodka shots. I think I had around ten in an hour with 2 beers. It was fun, until I passed out, woke up, and started vomiting all night long. I slept the entire next day.

Plenty of nights as described. My earliest memory of calling Ralph on the big white phone all night was after drinking a lot of Southern Comfort as a teenager. The second time, shortly thereafter, it was Jack Daniels. Now, simply the smell of either will turn my stomach.
I don't drink a lot of beer at a time--not a big fan of feeling like a blimp about to pop its rivets and having to belch and piss constantly. When I've had a beer or two lately, it's been Guinness Stout. One or two pints and I'm good. I don't catch much of a buzz from it really, maybe a light one if I haven't eaten beforehand.
If I'm drinking to feel it, I prefer top-shelf tequila (Anejos or Resposado), and will enjoy a Mexican beer after savoring a double shot, straight up (Dos Equis, Modelo Especial, Pacifico, and if they don't have these, I stoop to a Corona with lime). Chamucos tequila is wonderful, but expensive and hard to find in US clubs. My "Budweiser" tequila is Patron Anejos. The double followed by a beer produces just the right level of happiness. If I want to be really happy, I'll have another shot, and another beer. That's usually plenty good within two hours. More than that and I'm asking for trouble.

Have you ever tried Don Julio tequila? Very, very high quality stuff.

Yep, my brother turned me on to it. Oddly, I liked the Don Julio silver best. Don Julio is easier to find than Chamucos, but still not available in most of the bars/clubs where I occasionally drink.
My brother recently married a Mexican princess (at least in her own mind). Her parents have retired to Guadalahara--not too far from prime tequila country. They visit every year and bring up the good stuff. Of course, now that I'm on the East coast, I don't get to partake. Gah.
