I have misread Kraxis post and mistakenly moved it to the mod and editing forum. Sorry. Here is the original post:
If this is old news would you please bear over with me.
I was working on finding the reason why I could not play a certain mod and stumbled over this:
If you look at the richard (or saladin for that matter) file in the Jaffa folder on notepad, you will see that there is a stat called "GeneralRank::#" where # is a number. This is the number of stars this man has, even if he is only a unitcommander in this battle. Try and set one to 2-3 if there is not one already.
Then go and start the battle and bring up the F1 screen, then you will see that one unit has better stats than the others of that type. If it was 2-3 it will have 1 better in attack, the same it would show in Shogun if the general was Rank 2-3 and thus gave +1 to honour.
So Rank of your commanders are maybe not vital but certainly important, as you can't see this by the number of extra flags the unit carries.

La vie est un don.
Kraxis, that's interesting if I have understood correctly what you are saying.
i.e. a unit commander will add to unit's combat ability even if he is not the General of the army.
Will have to do some checking, but does this mean that if the General is rank 4, and there is a unit with a rank 4 leader in that army, then that unit gains +4 attack?
Well I think that's realistic and another plus for MTW.
Well, you have understood me well enough! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/cool.gif
If you give the unitcommander Rank 2-3, then you get +1 attack, 4-5 you get +1 attack and +1 def., 6-7 +2 and +1 and finally rank 8 should give two to each.
What has me wondering is that it was established in Shogun +1 in honour gave +1 to each not attack then def. Maybe it is still that way.

that's why the names of the unit leaders are more prominent now i think becuase of the PRG elemnts of the game.

Kraxis, I didn't understand as well as I thought. Rank 4 gives +1 attack and +1 defense not +2 attack.
So General rank 4 plus unit commander rank 4 would give a unit +2 attack and +2 defense. Which is the way it should be.
When STW first came out it was said that +1 honour did only give +1 attack.
Then +2 honour would give +1 attack and +1 defense.
Either a patch changed this or it was never the case, although I did seem to remember that it was proved via screenshots. Maybe the info screen was wrong.
It's only recently having come back to the forums after long absence for MTW, that I have seen that +1 honour gives +1 attack and +1 defense in STW.

I think this is true. Note (at times) the status of your troops will read "Encouraged by the General."

Yeah the RPg elements (V&Vs) can give major boosts (or minuses) to your entire army so its not just the raw leader stars anymore.
My friends...
I think I made a mistake... I'm not sure yet.
In my latest mod I saw no difference in my troops stats even though I retained one unit with a Rank 3 commander. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif
This need more testing.
Krais, I did some testing and found that only the General has an effect on units rating. So it is like STW.
Only benefit of high honour leader is to take over army if general dies.
Also +1 honour gives +1 attack and +1 defense. So +4 honour gives +4 attack and +4 defense.
Found that you can modify armour and weapon level above 3 and it works.
However the graphics don't.
I set my spearmen to have +6 weapon and +6 armour and in my unit icon I got a white/silver square and the weapon icon invisible.
So I have mithrail armour and invisible spears, No way could the enemy stop my unit now!
Downside is my men have to be careful not to spear each other, and to remember where they left their spears. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Wonder if I get flaming spears if I set weapon level to 8 or something?
Cool! That way you can create impossible units.
I figured after my revelation last night that it was not as great as I had hoped. Could have been VERY interesting if unitcommanders gave bonus to their men. As I lobbied for some time ago.
