This must be the eleventh time I've tried to install EB v0.81 a Final I downloaded from the EB site.
I've read the instructions, re-read and then read them some more and every time it's the same thing:it tells me the installation is finished but then says the desktop shortcut could not be copied and so, I can't run the mod.
Any suggestions?

The shortcut should be like this:

<installation directory>\RomeTW.exe -mod:eb -nm -show_err -ne

Such as
c:\games\RomeEB\RomeTW.exe -mod:eb -nm -show_err -ne or

d:\ukkonen\some\path\Rome\RomeTW.exe -mod:eb -nm -show_err -ne

You can create a new shortcut to your RomeTW.exe and apply the switches (meaning -mod:eb -nm -show_err -ne) to its properties. If you installed EB to the wrong directory however, you'll need to install yet again. See the installation guide stickied here if that's not what you refer to by "instructions".

Where exactly in properties do I have to apply these changes?
You're not talking to an expert gamer or programmer, I should mention.

It's to go in this field. Note that the -ne switch is not necessary, it makes the game run in windowed mode which is slower but allows quicker alt-tabbing.

It says that whatever changes I'm trying to make there are not valid.
Do you think sending me an exe via e-mail might help?

I'm pretty sure you've installed it in the wrong directory. Could you post a screenshot of your RTW directory where you've installed EB?

And I'm quite sure I posted it in the right directory.
The path is:

D:\Games\Rome - Total War

That's where I installed the vanilla, and then the mod.

That was critical information. If the Windows shortcut properties program says it's not valid, that means RomeTW.exe is not there, or the folder isn't. As you have spaces in your folder name, that's probably the problem. Try hyphens around both the Target exe (excluding the switches I think) and Start in:

"D:\Games\Rome - Total War\RomeTW.exe -mod:eb -nm -show_err"
"D:\Games\Rome - Total War"

If it does not help, please do post a screenshot or I can't help you any further.
