This game has been my favorite but in this moment frustration has surpassed the joy I get from it. And when my full strength legion and it's general vanished after a siege of 4 tours of Lepki just because I decide a retreat, I feelt I have to stop. So uninstall!!

Goodbye, goodbye

I've had that happen. But I save all the time so it doesn't matter. So should you, EB is reliable but it's still not 100%.

Why can't you just load the autosave?

And anyway, EB will draw you back, your hocked, you might as well admit it.

if there is no allied territory to retreat to, the army is destroyed. thats not a bug..

It is very annoying, though, when you don't notice where you are, as it doesn't warn you.

I think it does, the little icon appears if the army cant retreat from battle or what not, doesnt it?

Pharnakes

Yeah, but htat dosen't seem to mean anything, sometimes its there and nothing happens, and sometimes it isnt but the army dies... I dobn't know, prehaps the Ludus Magna will.

As a former military officer , here is some strategic input:

Before you attack:

1) always be sure that you have ground to retreat to.
2) establish your defensive perimeter
3) establish safe suply and reinforcement lines
4) concentrate your troops
5) move forward

I know this is game(bugged to) , but this logic worked for me even here.Never had a problem with retreating.

That has nothing to do with EB whatsoever.

I believe this is summed up by saying:

You're the daft eejit who decided to put an army into a situation where it was going to be destroyed if anything went wrong.

If you park a fleet just off the coast close to the army they will be able to retreat to it when you are deep in enemy territory.

If you park a fleet just off the coast close to the army they will be able to retreat to it when you are deep in enemy territory.
Plus you can use it to re-supply your army. Any army that is in a fleet becomes "Well Supplied" so if you're, say, launching a deep invasion of enemy territory you don't need to wait in the open country or retreat back to your home province, just hop inside a nearby fleet. Handy tip, that one.

Pharnakes

Is that changed from old builds, cause it didn't used to be like that.

LordCurlyton

They don't go to Well-Supplied, but conversly they will never be low on rations either. However, if they are on ship more than a turn or two they usually hit Rationing the turn after landing.

All the same, the fleet is good for retreats.

But then again, why did you retreat your fullstack? Just duke it out. It's a legion, for godssakes. If you decided to retreat a Roman fullstack against Carthies that probably can't beat your generalship, then you definitely deserve to lose that legion, so get back to the playing map and build another one to salvage your folly! Don't take the coward's way out.

It's punishable by decimation, you know. ;-)

That has nothing to do with EB whatsoever.

1) always be sure that you have ground to retreat to.

In this case, park your fleet so you can retreat there if it happens

2) establish your defensive perimeter

Send your spies to see enemy positions and numbers...
If you not going to attack , position on hill , bridge , river crossing , so you have better position then enemy. If they attack you..

3) establish safe suply and reinforcement lines

Again , in this case , place ship(s) in port closest to your recruitment center. That way you can bring units to replace your lost units , if necessary..

4) concentrate your troops
5) move forward

when you did all above , gather your troops and attack in any direction you think is best for you.

or, you can do none of above and take some risks..

I am really failing to see how this cannot be , possibly , relevant to EB, or any other military strategic game.Or are you saying that there is no need for any planing at all, but just "go and conquer"? :2thumbsup:

Yes, that is correct. I was referring to the whole thread, or maybe rather the initial reason for having it. It is not an "EB-issue" is all I was saying, and we can't really do anything about it. It's like someone stepping on their disc and breaking it and telling us about the problem here and how they are frustrated by it and not going to play EB anymore. :laugh4:

I have to agree. look at some of the major military blunders in history. The invasions of Russia by France and Germany. The extended supply lines did not help.

I prefer not to retreat. I advance in the opposite direction. :egypt:

mlp just layed down the basic guidelines to any non-guerrilla military. (Wish those idiots in the Pentagon knew those.:whip: )

You essentially did what some of the Crusaders did.<citation needed> Which was take all these people and march them all the way to the outremer in foreign land and get slaughtered by those waiting for you, whilst starving to death in the desert afterwards.(If you weren't already)
Also, consider the fact that you were attacking Lepki no less than FOUR times with the same Legion. I think it's safe to assume those guys were working overtime for your general and thus, were not in the best shape by round 4.(Especially if you lost that siege three times prior)Hell, they might have just killed your general and deserted for all we know! This is why we STARVE the city before we even think of ASSAULTING the city. So don't blame the game for being correct. Just blame it for kicking your ass.:2thumbsup:

Also, the Grey_Fox has given me my new sig.

Let me give you the whole story.
So I was the master of Spain, half of Gaul, west Africa and Italy. I've let the Charties live (3 settlements) because they make a good barrier between me and the Ptolies who are winning against AS. They were quiet enough until they started to march armies towards Numidia and Mauretania. I intercept those armies and destroy them. They started producing Elite African infantry so I think about taking Lepki and destroying the barracks. I arrive (they had 3 units of elites + 2 generals defending the city and another small army close), siege Lepki and DID not attack, just starved them. Then my spies report that they have no other family members just the 2 in the city I siege. That automatically means if I attack and take the city, their fraction will be destroyed. Unfortunately my general has something like -100% movement points, I cannot move. So I end the tour and the second cartaginese army attacks. I hit retreat => army gone. I did not see any icon showing that the army will be lost if they loose the battle.
I got mad. I know this is not a problem of EB, but uninstalling RTW means no EB, doesn't? :shame:
Anyway I did uninstall. Great mod and great job EB. Thank you for the great moments of pure joy playing EB!!! Time to move on!

Oh, OK. If you had no movement points, it sounds like you got hit by the weather script too.

So your guys were unsupplied, probably in some kind of sandstorm in the summer in North Africa in the desert, and you were attacked from two sides at once. I can understand your frustration but in that combination of circumstances a "lost legion" is at least strategically possible.

It wasn't actually unusual for armies trying to retreat from contact with an unengaged enemy force to pretty much get wiped out in the ensuing pursuit you know, especially in unfavourable conditions. By what I've read of it it tended to actually be more risky than fighting and getting routed, as the enemy happily mounting an aggressive pursuit would be intact and rested and not tired and decimated by battle...

Succesfully disengaging from contact without your army disintegrating in the process may well have been one of the most difficult strategic maneuvers for any warlord to execute, and even when succesful often involved sacrificing a fair few men as the rearguard. That may also well have been a major contributor to the peculiar "staring contests" armies could engage in for quite a while - neither willing to risk it all in a pitched battle, nor willing to risk destruction by pursuit by trying to break off until circumstances forced someone's hand.

Just thought I'd point that out.
