hehe....requiem for an online campaign game shld be the title of this thread.

i keep tellin ya, it would be very easy to do this if you get rid of the real time battles. you could even do it as a java applet on a web site. just make it similar to that old amiga title, lords of the rising sun, or whatever the name was. all battles get auto-calculated and movement tween provinces is on a fixed route with stepped movement based on time. very simple. you keep all the same principles as the campaign game and voila', instant online campaign.

Boy, definately hit a nerve here. This was a very big disapointment to me when I heard the news. Just interested why they couldnt do it?

Surely this could of been possible on a LAN ??

Stud & UK ... I thought I was sarcastic http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif

Welcome to totalwar.org... just don't feed the trolls, take the quips to heart or ask Khan7 for love advice without qualifying that you want it in a sugar coated version.

Konnichiwa Kraellin,

Agree, but it would be much better if that decision was left to the players. I'm sure you are aware of Magyars and Elmarks campaign.

All that's needed are some easy configurable tools (java, PHP, CGI) and some webspace. A group of fans can decide to hire some space (

StudUK, here's the reason in a nutshell. Let's say you and a friend are playing a campaign on a lan. You both invade an enemy territory. Your enemy reteats and your friend's enemy stands and defends. What do YOU do while he fights his battle vs the AI? (This assumes that the AI would be included in MP to begin with.) Now multiply this issue times the number of players. See the huge hassle? Some folks have been calling the MP campaign issues easy to overcome for two years now. They aren't or we would have it.

Auto resolve would indeed solve the problem but removes the tactical game which most people can't abide. Any other solution involves at the very least extended scheduling over days or weeks between the players. And THAT brings the number of interested parties down into the tiny range. Ardent fans would be the only players of such a game. Too few in fact for CA to bother with.

Yea, everthing would be much to complicated if you wanted everything to run smoothly. I'm sure that CA considered this idea, but saw it as being technically unrealistic.

After reading your mails, I now can understand the technical complications.

Thanks
