View Full Version : Question about casualties

When you win the battle of jaffa, the screen of casualties pops up. And there is Men-Taken.

This is almost bigger than men killed.

What is "men-taken", is it soldiers held prisoners of war? This seems a little unlikely to me, when should you capture them?

Please enlighten me

Well there was word that you can capture enemy soldiers and use them in your army.

The taken men are the ones you "kill" when they are routed.

I posted this question a while back and Darkmoor came up with the answers.

During battle there is a counter for Men Taken. At any time you can decide to kill these prisoners by clicking on the counter and thereby increasing your dread rating.

Didn't get any answer about what you can do with Men Taken after the battle though.

You capture prisoners throughout battle but the majority are when you are chasing down a routing unit.

Not sure if knights are more likely to take prisoners than other units. i.e more honourable units more likely to give quarter and to overwhelm opposition. One for testing I guess.

It's a great feature. You can either sell off the captives for ransom or you can execute them (which will raise your Dread). Unfortunatly, you can't make them part of yor army, they won't be any use because they aren' loyal to you. A troop of Chivalrous Knights are more likly to capture a general or king, whereas a band of lowly mercenaries would hack a commnder to pieces. Ver cool! Very realistic. Definitly a new trademark feature.

ANy "kept alive" are automatically attempted to be ransomed back to their faction (even rebel factions) - if its succesful you'll get money for them (especially any nobles captured and big cash for princes ;-) - if not your general says "You no longer need concern yourself with them" /em evil grin.

Darkmoor, thanks for filling in that little gap in info.

Understand you have probably been busy last couple of days and the questions are mounting up. So a very big THANK YOU. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Think I will save the rest of my questions for the game release as I have too many and can't decide what to ask next.

So i'll stick to exploring the mod opportunities in the demo, and actually playing what is the best demo release for yonks!

So do our units capture men even when the enemy isn't routing?
I think that is rather important.

if ur in a war with a nation and then u give them back there men for some money, then if u attack another provence wouldnt you just be fighting the same men that u have given back? wouldnt it be better just to kill them because if the army has lots of men that u have given back you will lose even more men trying to take that provence, so you will have to pay more money to train more men. so basically this ransom money is wasted?..wouldnt it be easier to kill the prisoners and then attack a provence with a much weaker force and not lose many men although u wont gain any money this would be better would it?

Maybe when your strapped for cash, i'm guessing that aristocrats will be worth it money to how many soldiers i am giving back wise.

If you do not want your dread rate to high. It all depends what type of game your playing and what winning conditions your going for.

It would cool if some of your men were captured you would get the option to buy them back
If you do not then , that wil decrease the loyality in the provinces they were built

When you have bought them back , than the cheap peasant soldiers will dissapear whereas the knights can be used again.

Fill-ins:

Yes you get to buy back any of your troops that are captured and yes they get returned (generally to a "safe" province away from the battle area)

YEs you also capture troops in "all other" parts of the battle (not just when routing) but once an army is routed they "surrender" (one presumes) far more easily... this is where light, fast cavalry excel - rounding up routing troops, capturing them and making sure they dont reform and rally.

Ransomed enemy troops also return to THEIR armies - yes.

How much does it cost to get back your men? And is the price the same for when you ransom? Can you perhaps set the price yourself?
