What are the best archers?

The strongest I've seen are the persian archers and they've won atleast half my battles, nothing kills morale like shooting flaming arrows into the back of a phalanx. Are their any with better range or power then Persians? Or even better are their any archers that can also fight as infantry?

Syrians are the best archers, and Cretans are the best in melee.

Nah, Komatai Agrianai are better in meele, they use celtic longswords thus=super ownage.

I'd say Syrians are the best, with Komatai Agrianai in a close 2nd.

I'm not entirely sure, but the various nomad horse archers (Scythians, Sarmations and others) may have an even higher missile value then the Syrians.
They Syrians are still better though because of their armour and shields. The Elamite archers are quite good also.

The Cretans have good stats but they have only 60 men (versus 80, large unit size) wich is a rather large disadvantage.

The syrinas aren't the best archers, they have missile 4, so do archer spearmen, most other eastern and steppe foot achers have 5 (including indians), and Kretikoi have 6.

The Cretans indeed have a higher missile value compared to the Syrians: 6 versus 4, however they have only 20 arrows versus 25. They also have significantly less armour, from the looks of it they'd get butchered by the Syrians. And that's not even considering the fact that they have less men per unit.

I've seen one unit of Syrians on a hill virtually wipe out two full units of Shuban Fradakshana (the eastern slinger guys) in a straight firefight - all the while all but ignoring the arrows no less than two units of mercenary steppe horse-archers poured into them. Eventually I simply ran out of ammunition and had to go dig out those guys (and their spearman mates) the hard way.

Infantry archers + decent armour = Teh Win.

Well the Cretans still have more men per mnai than the Syrians. But for an archery duel the Syrians would surely win due to the armor, as well as more arrows and longer range.

Lot theres lots of Heavy armoured cavalry that have bows but dont use them... Theres one (Scytian nobles, I think) that even count as missile cavalry, have an bow and fight with the spear/sword combo :clown:

But the best new cool archers that dont use their bows.... Mabe toxotai elephantoi catraphactoi (or something similar, :clown: )... How do you need an bow when you can just smash your enemys like bugs? :laugh4: :2thumbsup:

for me the most usefull have been the indian and elamite archers they are really really good, but the elite getai archers are nice in both ranged and melee attack!

Definetly Indian longbowmen, beautiful unit, cool longbow and scimitar. Very cheap yet devastating. It think that they may have the AP bonus, but I may be wrong.
