I've mentioned here before that I met Billy Powell in Kitchener, Canada, when I was playing a show there with Vector. His band at the time, Vision, was playing also. He actually approached me (we went on on the same stage, right after them), and complimented my "octopus-like" handling of four boards and a drum machine. I was in shock and hardly knew what to say, so I told him I practically worshipped his honky tonk piano playing. I mean, this is the Sweet Home Alabama guy for chrissake. He gave me a questioning look, as it was a Christian rock festival. *shrugs* I was just in the band man, all that stuff is fine I guess, but I was there to rock.

Granted, they're really much more Rockabilly, but you cannot deny that, to some extent, they were Southern Rock. I mean, listen to the live version of "Keep on Chooglin'."

Yes as in Louisiana :laugh4: Actually their from the Frisco Bay area. But their style of music is Louisiana swamp blues . Thus titles like Born on the Bayou, Bayou Country and Mardi Gras, Plus stuff like "good ol' boy". Much of their other stuff was anti war protest songs.

Seconded - The Allman Brothers live at the Filmore East is one of those all time classics you can listen to over and over again.

Also - why is Southern rock so dangerous? Skynard with their plane crash, the Allmans seemed to loose a member a year - perhaps that is why there is not many bands about today??

Im not sure if they are southern but Omar and the Howlers have a bit of a southern thing goin on.

Black Crows...? Southern born if not a completely southern style.

And a personal fav that Ive mentioned many times- Texas born Young Heart Attack...got a heavy Zep feel goin on too.

Forgot about them - very passable.

Have also remembered the Georgia Satelites - Nights of Mystery, Every Picture Tells a Story, Hands to yourself, Battleship chains - all quality stuff

Just remembered another person - Steve Earle - arguebly Country and western - but I love Copperhead Road - if you go down this route I would include Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen - or am I getting a bit off topic!!!

For me, both suffer from the "Pat Benatar" syndrome I mentioned earlier--heard their hits way too many times, night after night between sets. ZZ Top songs still bring a smile though. They were a favorite of my favorite woman met on the road, in Las Vegas. She would drag me out and we would dance. Man she could dance. Legs? Oh yeah ...and some.

The Eagles have more of an American west flavor. I wouldn't consider their style Southern at all. Maybe rock with a dose of country, in their earlier stuff particularly.

The Outlaws (Green Grass and High Tides), Georgia Satellites (Keep your Hands to Yourself), The Band (The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down) one of my favorites. Skynyrd rules all though. Wish I still had their original "Street Survivors" album cover that was discontinued (flames were removed) after the plane crash that killed Ronnie Van Zant in 1977.

It's a tie between Allman Brothers and ZZ Top. If pushed I go for ZZ Top.

The fact that the bros are Republican or the news that Saddam Hussein was adopted into the band never shook my faith. It's beer drinkin, hell raisin for Adrian II.

ZZ Top is great for me.

Their 'tres ombres' album with La grange is very high on my list.
This music piece must have been written by an illegal vegetation smoker i think.

I do not know much about others, but creedence clearwater is also an excellent band.
