Question:

When a faction is excommunicated, do the churches under control of that faction continue to operate? i.e. does the faction still benefit from the public order bonuses generated by the churches, and can they still recruit priests? I've never been excommed, so I don't know...hehe

Historically, when the Pope placed a kingdom under Interdict (the historical equivalent of the game's excommunication), then all churches within that jurisdiction would be closed and sealed, and the availability of the various sacraments either severely restricted or made unavailable altogether, so I was just wondering.

Im not sure if it stops recruiting priests and takes away publich health bonus and conversion bonus, but it causes unrest in settlements, was it like 40% or something...

I'm pretty sure that churches continue to operate normally. After all it's the faction leader who is excommunicated in the game. There is unrest penalty in your cities and you can become the target of a crusade but little else.

- Guru, excommunicated.

Other Catholic factions can also continue attacking you, normally they'll stop for several turns after one or two attacks...
