i was looking through the formation data folder, and there are all these different kinds of formations, how do you use those? can you use more that 9 at a time? or do you somehow replace the current ones with those?

those are prolly the faction specific ones which can be chosen during deployment which doesn't feature in the demo so...

can the attacker now also choose his formation before the battle begins?
I have always found it silly that during the first minutes one had to wait for units to get into position.

that's not terribly unrealistic, hamster, as the general would have to take time, on meeting the opposing army, to organize his troops in the best formation to suit his plan for defeat said opponents. It's not like they're gonna march from fortification to field in line-of-battle formation. Actually, the time it would take to get your army into fighting formation is a whole lot LESS in the game than it would be in real life.
