View Full Version : Query - Good Unit Combinations......

I was wondering, what are some of the better unit combinations out there? I've recently been getting some great success with pikemen w/crossbows in my campaigns, and it seems to work with great effect. (what i do is have spearwall up, and have my crossbows literally stand in the spears. Then watch and laugh at the occasional cavalry unit attempts to charge my crossbows only to have most of the unit decimated upon impact. Also, this works quite well against infantry as well, since crossbows do quite serious damage to enemies, and the pikemen block for them, and actually take little or no damage during a charge, assuming thats because they aren't the intended target)

If anyone else has had any good combination strategies that seem to have worked, i'd be grateful if you would post them here (example: spearmen and sword unit alternately ranked in the same spot. *i haven't tried this yet*)

sometimes you just dont have a choice, like playing england and you must have those levy spears ans the best archers plus swordmen coz bills and dismounted english cant be reliable.

I personally like the Longbowmen/Billmen combo. Even know sometimes I see billmen get chewed up I see more often that they are the ones eating up horses or tearing up the flanks of medium infantry.

Scotland - Four units of mercenary crossbowmen (or Scottish archers, if you haven't converted everything to a city), two units of border horses (to catch routers), your general and a unit of mounted crusaders (for sweeping around and taking out the opposing general), and fourteen units of whatever type of pike militia you have laying around. Assuming that the opposing army doesn't run away from the outset or you're not fighting against a full stack of horse archers, it's pretty much impossible to lose with this combo.

well, not entirely what i wanted (english isn't main language) but good info anyways =)

what i mean is what kinds of groups do others use as a single unit? by that i mean laying two units on top of each other so they are sort of mixed. I've also seen good results using spearmen+SwordMilitia in most melee, since enemy cavalry cant get into the mix without catching spears among the swords, and likewise, the swordsman take down enemy spearmen in the melee much better then just having spears

edit: here is what i mean in picture form (2nd edit: i messed up links) 3rd edit: imageshack stopped working, had to re-do my 2nd picture from photobucket

notice in the second one the crossbows are still firing after barely catching the cavalry/few spearmen attack. I was thinking of trying to do the same with good shield unit and archers as experiment

OH, I guess Billmen, Swordmen combo is nice. Swordmen pretty much slaughter anything infantry based while Billmen help out against horse and armor.

Pikemen, if they actually...pike?
Crossbows.

Billmen were great in MTW with longbows, but now they aren't all that I had hoped for. Now if I can get musketeers to fire inside a pikemen square, I can dominate world!!!
