SPQR can recruit this heavy cavalry, drawn AFAIK, fom predominatly greek influnced socii, but greek nations can recruit no comparble cavalry in Italy, is this just part of the still very wip non-SPQR Italian recruitment, or intended for some reason?

The Roman guys will correct me if I'm wrong, but the Extraordinarii are Italian allies fighting within the Roman Polybian system. Without that system the Extraordinarii wouldn't exist. They were few in numbers and other cavalry from the allies would fight as Equites.

Yeah, but if the men are avalible there to fight in the greek heavy cavalry style, surely greek factions should be able to recruit heavy cavalry in the same areas?

Well, are they necessarily in the greek style? They are Italian cavalry, from a region that had noticeably better cavalry than the Greeks from Attica and the Peloponnese. And, like I said, they are Polybian.

Also, model and skin limits.

Well, the look pretty greek to me, or is that just because of model and skin limits, like you said?

Edit: Ohh, and if they were introduced by Polybius, how come you can recruit them from the beggining?

Don't they share a model with the KH Hippeis Xystrophori (or whatever; the Greek Noble Cavalry)? If they don't they look mighty similar.

And, like I said, they are Polybian.

They are Camillan, and remain available during the Polybian era.

Since they're from the Italian allies, I see nothing wrong with allowing anyone to recruit them from a level 5 regional MIC (likewise pedites extraordinarii from a level 4 regional MIC, or hastati samnitici and samnitici milites at the appropriate cities and regional MIC levels). In principle, the Italians could ally with anyone - Greeks, Celts, Carthage, whatever, as long as they took out the Romans. From the sound of it, right now there's no reason for anyone to put a type IV government in Rome, though that should be a fairly plausible place to use such a government.

My bad. Looks like things have changed since I last played a Romani campaign.

Regardless, they are Roman units in a Roman military system recruited from Rome's allies. Samnites are different.

Pedites and Equites Extraordinarii are simply a picked number of the socii that were at the disposal of the Consular commander of the army.

That said, yes, they do fight in a Greek fashion but similar regional cavalry will be available in Southern Italia in our next public release. They won't be Hetairoi though.

Then why do they fight like greek heavy cavalry? They're better than a lot of greek heavies, including the Thessalikoi and the Ptolemaioi medium-heavies.

Edit: ohh, ok, thanks Pillipvs.
