Erm...need a program to sort like 5000 lines and columns in Excel

The title says it all.

You wizzies can help me where I failed. Here's the deal: I need a program that can help me sort and arrange something like 1000-2000 lines of Excel, and sort them nicely into columns....

You get the idea.

What format is the data in?
What version of Excel are you using?
Number of columns of data would be useful.

Do you know how to use the data filter?

5000 lines is rather small... I have to use multiple Excel spreadsheets as Excel caps out at 65000 ish (its a 2 to the power thing that even in 2007 they haven't increased).
