SO, Mexicans are escaping the poor ghettos of Mexico for a better life in America? They seem to be sitting on quite an amount of money currently, with Senor Carlos Slim.
Thoughts?

It has nothing to do with the Mexican poor. The rich gets richer, the poor gets poorer. To use a rich man with investments across the world as an example of a nation's prosperity is not, in my opinion, valid.

QFT. Mexico is one of the worst countries when it comes to this.

Yep. I'd be surprised if this guy even lives in Mexico.
You should look at per capita numbers..

The answers I was looking for.
GDP/PPP (2005 est.): $1.068 trillion; per capita $10,100.

Not THAT poor. However the rich Mexicans import Guatemalans and Hondurans to do their menial work.

The use of "per capita" is at best deceiving when demonstrating the true value of the average citizen of a given country.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Per_capita_income
Since we must assume that the Mexican wealthy - whom are few and far between and control the bulk of the denaro are included, the $10,000 (is that pesos or usa dollars?) per capita is deceiving.
Having spent more than a little time in Mexico - primarily Baja - I know how poor the Mexican people on average are. For the most part they are friendly, willing to aid strangers (in Baja everyone needs help at some time - if only to get a tire or get out of a ditch), hard working, and are easy to laugh. They enjoy life, as best they can. Are extremely family oriented and have enormous extended families - those that don't cause harm are always welcome.
Once a person gets below Encenada, or atleast Santo Tomas, everyone waives. Stranger or not.
The people maybe $poor$ monetarily, but certainly not in heart.
:balloon2:
The site I was sourcing uses $USD for all GDP/GDP per capita information.

You know why this guy is so rich? Because cell phones are friggin expensive in Mexico, but still alot easier than getting a landline installed. Everyone is happy that cell phones are opening new options to the hated telecom monopoly, but that doesn't change the fact that you'll pay about twice as in the US for an equivalent model of phone, and about twice as much per month for equivalent air time.
