From what I heard, in the Throne Room, the emmisaries and other diplomatic units will speak in the accent of their ntive tongue. But from the soldiers...you'll just hear they're bloodcurdling screams.

Well, in the demo in the /sounds/battle/orders folder, there are folders for Arabic, Latin and Russian. Each folder has orders for "advance", "retreat", "attack", etc.

conralius you hadnt expecified the language that they speak you only have said the accent but not the lenguage.
Byzantines didnt speak in russian
No the Byz. didn't speak russian, thus they will speak latin, which they do if you test it out in battle.
Emp. Conralius

Yea Bruteztrausen...But I'm pretty sure they all speak English, just with English/Russian/Latn accents.

I think there's more to it though, what do the French sound like? Or the Germans? The Spanish? They won't have English/Latin/ or Russian accents. I'm sure they'll all have unique styles and lingoes. I'de hate to see a German speak with a Russian or English accent. Remember, the demo is incomplete...

you can´t speak english with latin accent
You have got it wrong...
The latin/russian/arabic is for the units in battle. If you listen to your british archers you can hear the "Teilar entendetea"(sp), "take aim" to us. Or try to put your men on Hold Ground "Resistitea"
For the throne room I think Darkmoore wrote that all factions speak english but the accents of their country. So we get to hear something similar to the to that arrogant portoguese envoy.
Emp. Conralius
07-15-2002, 04:34
Kraxis,
All that I've been saying was pertaining to the room! I really don't pay attention to what the soldiers say on the field.
Emp. Conralius
07-15-2002, 04:35
Bruteztrauzen,
I have no idea what the hell you are talking about...
Emp, bruteztrausen apparently asked about the troops as well, and since he was the one to start this I think answering him has its value, would you not think so? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Also, I made a general post, not pointed at any one person.
He said you can't have a latin accent since everybody talk latin with their own accent. Latin as a native language is dead, thus nobody knows how it really was pronounced.
bruteztrausen
07-15-2002, 06:00
yes it is pronuncied as the spanish but they dont use the "J" and the "LL" and the "Ñ".
And that is very difficult to pronunciate latin in english or french because it has a normative of phonethic.
And I think that it is not just tht all nations speak in englis, they must speak all countries in latin who has the international lenguaje of the epoc.
I hope than in spanish version they speak in my languaje.
erm, i took latin, it's not hard to pronounce in english

OK, this is the bottom line: In the game all factions will speak English (in the UK and American Version) but will have their factions's accent. Ad this is in the strategy map. The strategy map s what I've been talking about the whole time! I really don't care what the troops on the field say. Kraxis, does that compute???!

My friend Emp., maybe read the topic of a thread before you tell off people if they don't pay enough attention to your posts.
In the demo we have Arabic,English,Latin. Arabic of course for muslim factions which is perfect. Poland / Russia should speak Russian which is OK. Spain, Italy and maybe Byzantinum speak Latin which is more or less acceptable.
The real question for me is what language do the French, Germans and Danes speak? I would have prefered to have something that resembles Western European languages in general, instead of having Germans and French speak Latin as it prob. will be now. But I don't have a problem with it.
On the other hand to include French,German,Scandinavian and Greek language folders would be a bit too much. And even then people would argue that Polish is different from Russian, etc .. I would however love to have Welsh/Gaelic as I have never heard it and it should sound cool.
[This message has been edited by Bohemond (edited 07-15-2002).]
Anyone noticed that the English speak Latin with a distinct English accent?
Will the other Latin groups have their accents... say the French with a French accent? It would be rather amusing if they just had a Frenchman speaking the way the English in the Demo are.
I would love it if each faction had it's own sounds. Even better if the rebels, like the Scots / Irish had their own Gaelic.
Also, anyone noticed that some of the battle cries in the Demo are the same as STW. I don't think that the Europeans and Arabians would use some of those high pitch OOooo's that the Asiatics were so fond of. What are your thoughts ?
Cheers

bruteztrausen how do you know that latin was pronounced as spanish? Was it with the lesper some spanish dialects are fond of? Was it more like the mexican spanish...
I would personally think that italian is closer to latin as it is derived directly from it in latins own area.
Emp. why do you think I'm only responding to you? Why would I care if you only talk about the throneroom (which apparently is not in http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif), you are NOT the originator of the questions asked.
I am certain the English troops in the demo are speaking Latin, as you say with an English accent. I have been unable to make out the exact words (yet) so I can't translate it. It is possible they are Latin-like words with no specific meaning, which I think may have been done in other games, but perhaps someone else has identified them accurately?

And just the accusation of me being gay, made by you shows this entire forum how immature you are as well as idotic...
Now I believe we were talking about the speech issue. When the enemy general routes, one of your soldiers usually tell you with a bit of dialogue. The Mongols and the Japanese had different bits of dialogue in STW, so I'de hope that when an enemy routes in MTW, that if youhappen to be France, will speak with an English accent. Do you guys know what I'm talking about?

On a more serious note it is quite possible that Spain retained a more unique Latin accent merely because it was more isolated than the Italian peninsular after the collapse of the western provincia of the Roman empire. Then again, at the height of the empire, Romans/Italians would have regarded the Hispanic accent/dialect as bumptious and laughable, it never being a 'classic' Latin accent.

It all comes down to a compromise which has to be made. Otherwise we would need at least 20 different language folders. Btw the real languages of this age would be much different from the ones we know today. 11th Century German? I wouldn't understand a word. The same would be true for English.
I also think the whole idea of resemblance between Spanish/Italian and Latin is misleading some people here. Like somebody in another thread about the HRE posted the misconception Italy=Rome, or some other said Byzantinians should speak Latin, though it's well known they were Greek. (Well it could have been me who said that, but I meant it will be like that in the game, which doesn't imply that I think its correct)

This a part of what you wrote to me before that post where you said half the time I wasn't responding to you. I understand that very well thank you. But if you listened to me I was responding to the originator about the troops, why did you think I responded to you?
And where does that post about me being the spanish guy come from??? If you noticed he is from Spain, I'm from Denmark... But what the heck we are practically living next door to each other and speaking the same language.
If you will calm down then I will too. We have an agreement?
Emp. why did you call me for bruteztrausen, or rather the other way around? That was uncalled for, I'm living in Denmark and he is living in Spain I gather. That might not seem too far for you, living in the US, but trust me there is a world of difference between us and our countries. I never insulted you, yet you put in the same basket as the one who does.
Why you would do that is simply beyond me.

Honestly this place is just one big bitch fight.
Secondly I don't know who you think you are "Emp." but people such as Red Peasant are respected members of the community since they have been around a very long time. So I'm sure what he says is in your best interests.
This Dojo is not a place where you can let go of everything and curse your anger away. We do like to keep to some guidelines. Cursing isn't really wanted.
Also insulting people by calling them "gay" (can't remember who said it) is something that we don't need.
This is a community. Now obviously not everyone likes everyone else in the community but can we at least be civilised and try to just be men (and women) about it and not get into a hand-bag joust.

Toda,
I was the one called gay. Listen man, I joined the forum just to talk about TW. But if I'm insulted I will adress that issue. And I see it rather unfair that you would point me out for all thats been happening. I can see from your post that you didn't know who called who gay, maybe this can be remedied if you actually read all the posts. I'm not the one who is "destroying the forum." Before you start to point fingers, please do the necessary research...
Kraxis,
I was talking to you at one point, and then Brautezhausen responds personnally to a post that was meant for you. I really wasn't talking to Brautezhausen. I really don't see it necessary to incorporate your nationalities in your last post.
Red Peasent,
I really have no quarrel with you. I don't really have anything to say to you. I just thought writing you would do some good since Toda thought I was disrespecting you...
And on a final note: I'm just hear to discuss a great game, not to bitch at each other. And if I feel offended believe you me, it will adress it. And just because do so doesen't mean you have to point the finger at me. Let's see, Brautezhausen called me gay,(which shows how immature he is) and said "all people from Hampton are sons of bitches!" Toda, I mean you no insult, but if you read over the posts, you'll see who is right. Now I've said this 2X before, I'm willing to drop the subject.

With all that aside, you know when you kill the enemy general or cature him, there is usually some dialogue saying "my lord, we've killed the enemy general..." Say if you happened to be the French, would the dialogue be in English? Would it have a French accent? Thats my real question here.

Emp. you seem to be right that I needed not commenting on where I was from. I guess I was a little fast there.
In fact I think most of our quarrel has come from a series of misunderstandings.
That exact situation we know almost nothing about (the comment when the general is dead, enemy's or yours). We have one little thing to refer to though, the movies that was posted at gamespot several months ago.

Ok here is basically what the sounds in the throne room will cover.
Eg. STW each clan had a specific accent when an emissary came to you to ask for an alliance. Therefore it will be the same in MTW. It will all be in english(english version) but each faction will have its own accented english. i.e. Speak english with a french accent and you will get what the french faction sounds like in the throne room.
-----------------------
For the in-battle voices who knows... CA have done some really un-thinkable and cool things for MTW so maybe they will do something new and innovative for these.
