I dont think it would be a continent with provinces, but maybe a golden goal or a historical event?

"Seasoned navigators, the Norse quickly discovered that Greenland’s west coast tilts noticeably westward as it runs north. Archaeological evidence reveals that the Norse Greenlanders sailed even farther west to the New World — almost five hundred years before the Portuguese and Spanish made their “discoveries.” Not only did they frequent the coast of Labrador both then and later, but during those early sailings they may have sailed at least as far south as the St. Lawrence River, in the vicinity of modern-day Nova Scotia.

Ha... and you all forgot about the great ancient Chinese empire.

Look at the art work in Tang dynasty (618-907AD), and that of Mexico. And you will be amazed by the uncanny resemblance.

Guess you guys are too western-oriented, that you completely forgot the orientals, oh, well, I won't blame ya.

But please bear in mind that western countries were very far behind till modern age.

If I remember correctly, the ancient greeks wore Toga (basically just a piece of cloth wrapped around the body), because they couldn't sew pants. Thus "our glorious greeks wear toga, while those barbarians from the east wear pants".

And, by the way, the concept that Columbus, as a person, can DISCOVER a continent, is riduculous.

The greeks wore togas because they couldn't sew pants?

If they were that backwards then how did they weave the friggin fabric for their togas?

Maybe they just didnt WANT to sew pants.

And as for the Norse, I think it was Nordic Vikings that whiped out the settlement at Roanoke....

Give me a piece of cloth and ask me to make a toga. I just wrap it around me, and fastern it with a pin.

Give me a piece of cloth and ask me to make a pair of pants. I begin to develop a big headache.

The account of Toga vs pants comes from a book published by Pergamon Press.

Being a Dane I love to think of the Vikings as the first over there...

But several factors speak against it.

First there were the natives, I think they should get the credit really. The Chinese, perhaps, perhaps not, they did not create a continuous link to the Americas. Neither did the Vikings.
Columbus did however.

So while the natives ancestors were the ones to 'find' the land, it was Columbus that made the rest of the world aware of it.

I was listening to a radio program where they were describing chinese maps that showed the north american coast extremely accurately. These maps were dated early 1400's but are thought to be reproductions of even older maps.
