Fellow EBers!

EB is free to download and use, and will stay that way. However, keeping our servers and bandwidth up is not free, and we are downgrading them now in order to reduce this cost. We ask you to consider supporting EB with a small donation for this purpose (Paypal charges $0.30 per transaction in some cases, plus a percentage, so please make the donation bigger than this :beam:). You can do so through our website at https://www.europabarbarorum.org, the button is in the lower right corner.

Note that we are not trying to make a profit, nor will we accept money for any other purpose than these running costs. All donations will strictly be used for this server/bandwidth maintenance, and the donation button will be disabled when the costs are covered. See the Disclaimer (https://www.europabarbarorum.org/ebcomwww/disclaimer.html) for more information on this policy.

Bah! No money left. I used the last on the pub and on a pair of jeans. I destroyed my last good pair at the pub while dancing. Erhm..

I dont have a mastercard or a visa anyway. How does Paypal works? Do I need a visa or a mastercard for it to work?

Have you considered a contest or some sort of game where, depending on the level of donations, new content is displayed, information provided, etc...

What about giving recognition to people who have made contributions and significant contributions?

Maybe a thread with a list of names, etc...? Just a thought.

Paypal is a debit payment service. In contrast to credit payment where you first buy stuff and pay later, here you add money to your account and then pay. You can add money to your account by mastercard/visa, certainly, but also by single payments from your bank, so you do not have to give paypal your credit card information and do not require having it either. I believe Paypal restricts accounts without credit card information registered to 1000$ worth though, but that's irrelevant for this.

Note that Paypal works in dollars or euro, I think conversion rates apply to those with other currencies.

Hehe. That amount is over the last two years. Most of that (roughly 90% is from a handful of EB members). We need some help with the most current quarter's server costs, which are a part of that total, but we definitely don't have those sort of costs every quarter. Sorry if that was confusing to anyone.

do you guys have any lines of comunication open with CA? i was under the impression that they were big fans of alot of the modding community and (imo) yours is probably the most impressive out there. i would have thought they might be willing to contribute something to your running costs. you do essentially provide a great advert for their company.

Whatever EB does, please, please, do not keep your money in a paypal account. It is not a registered bank, they can freeze your account at will, and you will never see that money again. I've known way too many people personally, and read about many more, who've had this happen to them.

That's an interesting point, certainly from the perspective that CA benefit from the mods IMO, in that they increase both appeal and interest in their games, and thus sales, one would presume.

But when it comes to the big guys parting with the dosh, well that's perphaps a different matter.

well it could be considered a form of marketing. how much money is needed to run the website for the year?

i imagine a few hundred £'s would be nothing on the overall running costs of CA but could probably go a long way to helping EB out.
I seriously think it is something worth looking at. Are their lines of communication available? I know Lusted who posts here on the org has just started working for them for example.

If they started giving us money, then its reasonable for other mods to expect the same treatment. Slippery slope to CA supporting modding teams, which is not wise and isn't particularly good for us either. If individual CA members wanted to support our team we would welcome their donations as if they were any other fan, but the company supporting us is just not on the cards, and we wouldn't want it to be.

Just don't pursue this line of enquiry any further.

well along the lines of revenue raising, look at RTR 7, a lot of people have or are planning to buy barbarian invasion just for RTR, im sure if u ported to BI people would do the same, so CA cant deny Mods help raise revenue.

The status as I write is that $2591 out of $2600 is paid, and with my own donation of the last 9 dollars the site should disable the donation button once it's updated, for a while. Our reduced costs due to our two servers being consolidated into one will hopefully keep the balance good.

If you want to make a contribution but the current costs have already been covered, like now, please wait until the next month (not very far off this time). I would like to heartily thank all contributors :balloon2:.

The web page isn't updated realtime or even daily, so the donation button may still be there even though the costs are in reality covered, and you can still donate at that time. But on the next page update, it will disappear so no more donations can be made until more costs are accumulated (as we do not do this for profit).

If you have donated in excess of the current negative balance, or you donated "late", it is not lost! It will count towards the next month's cost. I've forgot the exact cost per month, but I think it was 70 or 75 USD.

Why doesn't the EB team consider selling merchandise such as shirts, hoodies, mouse pads, etc with EB themes on the merchandise? I am sure you will have tons of customers and I will be one of them! There are definitely more than 100,000 people playing EB and about 5,000 of them hardcore fans who would pay a considerable price for stuff with EB on it. This way you'll never have to worry about donations and plus you will have extra money to further improve EB or just some for yourself!~;)

The minute we make some money "for ourselves" as you say, is the minute CA can shut us down, or make further games of its franchise unmodifiable.

This is a perfect situation as it is. CA makes the games moddable, we can help improve them. Why jinx it? I don't think any of us are in it for the money.

So is there no way of doing it from the perspective of covering costs, and a surplus goes to charity?

I put in a little tonight, hopefully my financial situation picks up soon and I can throw in quite a bit more for you guys! Thanks again for this awesome mod, I've gotten so much more "play value" from EB than I have from most $50 priced PC games! Assuming I can cover my rent and food this month, I'll send you guys some more a few weeks from now, please keep up the good work on EB2 and make Medieval 2 finally worth playing :2thumbsup:

Edit: Seriously, EB reminds of the best games from the "Golden Age" of PC gaming... the ones that you could tell were treated as a work of art, and that the game developers were as passionate about making the game as some of us are about playing them. Those are few and far between now, and I'm glad for you guys (the EB dev team) being here, and to be able to support all of you. Just dropping in this melodramatic edit, as you guys should be commended!

Why use PayPal?

It's easy to send money and shop online
You can donate without sharing your financial information
Over 50,000 online merchants accept PayPal

Don't have a PayPal account?
Use your credit card or bank account (where available).

How long would say, one dollar keep the servers running for?

-Praetor-
02-25-2009, 20:04
One dollar?

100 dollars are needed for the server each month, that's 3,3 dollars each day. Your dollar would keep the server running for little more than 7 hours.

If every person that has downloaded Eb, in it's various versions, would have donated one dollar for his download, we would have $441763 (yes, almost half a million dollars) accumulated in donations for the server. That's enough for keeping the server running for 368 years.

Instead, the amount of the donations today is $4438.98. We are very thankful for the generous souls that have donated without being compelled to do so by a sales contract like when you buy a game. But sadly, they are too few, and what we have manged to accumulate from their generosity is dangerously near the insufficiency line.

bovi
02-27-2009, 13:20
That's probably only about 70000-150000 individual users who have played and enjoyed the game, but still there would of course be more if each gave one dollar. Excepting that Paypal takes a fee for each transaction, of course. We're non-profit though, and are currently a tiny bit in the black, which isn't bad.

Not quite sure, but it's from august. It does not get updated every day, but usually more often than weekly. Being more than 100$ in the red several times has made us look for cheaper hosting, and we're moving to it shortly.

Turned out I had two dollars sitting in my Paypal account, so I sent it your way. Will donate more once I find a job!

Thanks Bovi.

Then I will re-activate my PayPal-Account.

Is there any Banner or Sig that links to the "donate"-site to make a little advertisement so more peeps do actuall know that there is the urgent of donating some money to help maintaining the beatiful website?

No, there is no fancy flag to hoist. We hope that this small notice attracts the attention we need. Occasionally we bump it, and often that is all it takes to get the current deficit covered. It will still be a good thing for us to get a similar server for less cost though, then we will not need to ask for donations as often.

For all those who venture here, here is a small gift from Google books. (I am very thankful for that service and so should you be)

Donation made: 50 Pound Sterling (wish they made conversion from AUD easier to calculate!)

Keep up the great work :whip:

I view this not so much as a donation as thanks... the amount of time I have wasted (ahem.. 'spent') on this mod is easily greater than 10 or so lesser games ever, even including the great BG & BG2 series (and THAT is saying something as I wasted literally years on them).
Actually making the Romans playable (and really enjoyable) was just one of the achievements. After Vanilla I thought I was cursed to be forever killing the Roman insects.

Respect

I've enjoyed EB for years now, and am just now getting around to reinstalling it, so i figured it's time I donated. While it's nothing extravagant (12 USD), EB is a fantastic mod that's brought enjoyment back to a game I thought I was done with, and I thank the developers for their continued effort.

Is there a posibility to donate in cash via Western Union or FedEx?

I'm from a country which its entire banking system fell from the international market nine years ago, so for me, like most of the people here, it's cash only.

Ohh weird that no one answered your question, I don't know why.
But I guess the one responsable to pay for server can be sent that money however I can't remember who it is, so if you still wish to help us with that I'll try and find out.

And the current donation chart:

Current Hosting Costs (August 2009 to June 2010): £555
Currently Donated: £450.00

It humbles you (at least the ever arrogant and haughty me) to see such dedicated fans, so eager yet patient and helpful.

Much obliged and obliging for us.

Thanks everyone who donated ever.

@ Flying Pig:
Thank you, Sir!

@sarissa:
PayPal should work without problems in Australia, if you have further errors with your bank account, get in contact with your bank support, they should help you, it could be that PayPal itself doesn't work with your bank. In any way, thanks for your effort!!

A little ... donation for now, it will be more as soon as my bank-account allows...
You deserve it and much more, when one brings such an addition to a game like R:TW in stores, it would also have its price and for THAT good work I am more than greatful.

thanx for the great mod !!!
by the way: playing EB on OS X, everything works smooth and fine thanx to Feral and Edwin too
