As Jannasaries were updated, they carreid guns, yet it seems that the total war version will only fight close combat. As you upgrade, can you kit them out with handguns or will thy remain heavy infantry?

Well, there are basically 3 types of Jannisaries in MTW. There are the Jannisary Heavy Infantry with polearms. You got the Jannisary Light Infantry with bows and axes. And then you got the Jannisary Bowman, with powerful composite bows. In the late era, the Turks also have Ottoman Infantry, who carry swords as well as the Ottoman Siphahi, a heavy cav. unit that can match up with any other cav., they have swords and bows. Sorry, no gunsas far as the jannisaries.

Because as we all know *chuckle* AOE2 *snort* was the best. Have to love a game where an ambush by 20 pikeman against 15 uber-knights(paladin was it?) is crushed. Even when you have them flanked in every possible way. Arrgh.

Rokkaku from the sounds of it every faction is going to have around 3-4 unique units. Simple matter of math when you have around 100 units and 12 factions. English have longbowmen, billmen, and I am positive I remembered a third a minute ago.

Janissaries were Christian slaves (sometimes Greek but they preferred Slavs) held by Turkish slaves. The Ottoman Empire was a slave empire...the Turks themselves were slaves. Their commanders were Turkish slaves.

And yes they had guns...but later.

The Ottoman Empire was a slave empire? What do you mean? The Turks and Turkish commanders were NOT slaves. The Turkish army was commanded by the Grand Vizier... the second in command of the whole empire. He was definitely not a slave. Yes, Janissaries were mostly Christian slaves, but how does that make the Ottomans a slave empire?

I agreewith Turken. No empire can be built on the backs of slaves, as well as ruled by them. Where's the hierarchy?

Good point... I cannot think of a single empire in history which relied on slaves to survive, and was also ruled by slaves. Sounds impossible.

The Mamluks are the last ruling dynasty of Egypt before they were conquered by the Ottomans. But after they overthrew the Ayyubid Dynasty, they became the hierarchy, and thus not slaves. Ironically, in the game, they have a unit called the Mamluke Handgun. The Turks can aqcire this unit as well asthe Bedouin Camel Gun.

More Jannisary stuff:

Janissary Bows
Yeni Cheri' - the 'New Soldiers' - are a new Turkish system for national and royal (not feudal) armies. Disciplined, drilled and professional, Janissary Archers are intended to break up and weaken enemy formations so that the other soldiers of the Janissary corps can move in for the kill.

Janissary Heavy Infantry
Janissaries are the capable, disciplined elite of Turkish armies with a fearsome reputation. These heavy shock troops are supposed to batter a way through enemy armies so that others can pour through the gap. They are heavily armoured, and armed with polearms that give them an advantage in close combat.

Janissary Infantry
The Janissaries are raised from provincial children taken into the Sultan’s service, and trained to do nothing but fight and obey. Janissaries do not fight for personal honour; they fight to win. These soldiers are armed with bows and swords, making them a tactically flexible and powerful unit.

yeni cheri? hehe I like how CA pays attention to so much detail. Yeni Cherililer(plural form) is what Janissaries are called in Turkish. I can't wait to lay siege to Constantinople with them! Muhahahaha!

We can't say the turks are the best faction in the game cause no one has played the finished version yet and plus of what I've seen on the campaign screens the Germans have emmense armys.

Of course Steven, Turks are probably not the best faction in the game. It's all just speculation. But if Janissaries are as powerful in the game as they were in history, then I think its safe to assume that the Turks are probably at least ONE of the best factions in the game.

Here are the Jannisary Bows, or the Jannisary infantry, I can't remember which. I do admit, they look somewhat rediculous:
