View Full Version : Banner system
Hello,
This is about a new option and is not related to the current bannersystem, that one can not be removed either.
The banner is currently only activated in The Citadel (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=131), in some limited way too. That's one of the nice parts: it can be activated per forum and each forum can have it's own set. The Citadel is about M2TW, so it has 'banners' to M2TW sections, the hosted mods for M2TW. It's using only 1 image now, but each ad can have it's own image, ALT and link. I think 500*75 will be a good size, but that can be made a bit leaner, maybe positioned somewhere else.
The RTW forum could get banners to the RTW mods.
I like some feedback about the size and placement and then we can have some ad and short descriptions for the mods.
Cool idea. Don't know if I like the placement of the banners right now though, but I don't know where else to put them that'd work fine. Also, the ones right now are pretty bland, if that's going to be done then some good relevant spammy banners for each mod would be far more enticing to click on, and they should perhaps lead to some good summary FAQ pages about each mod/section. I do realize this is a work in progress, that's just my :2cents: to throw in.
Cheers

Hello Wacker,
Yes, the current ones are a quick job to get an idea. Each mod will have its own (modding teams have good artists).
The banner is moving the whole forum 75 pixels down at the moment. It should be possible to move it into the already available room (am working on another feature, will look at that in a bit).
Tosa, maybe stick it to the right of the "Posting Rules" chart? Also if anything it might stand to be a bit bigger, as to give folks a little bit more flexibility on what they can put in the banners?
Cheers,
:balloon2:
Tosa, Can you explain the new link Add post to favorites?
Please check https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?p=1611221#post1611221 Garcilaso de la Vega el Inca.
Such may indeed be good Whacker. It may allow bigger banners, while not pushing the topics too much away.
Like the new position. Looking at it, you could probably give someone 700x150 and it'd still fit fine. Don't know how it looks on other's desktops, but I am using 1280x1024 and the Shogun TW skin, if that makes any difference. Again just my :2cents:
Cheers

Hello Whacker,
We can try a few dimensions and see what looks best.
Someone has (simple) banners in stock? 100 high, 125 high, 600-800 wide?
Aww! I was rather enjoying my personal banner spam!
My sig is 600 x 150, it looked a bit tall maybe, 100 or 125 pts might be better. And 800 would also be a bit wider and give more options.
Here is 800 x 125:

I presume it's normal that I just saw that banner in the Watchtower?
Hello Warmaster Horus,
Yes, this bannersystem will be used to, for example, make some advertisement for M2TW mods in the Citadel. We try to find the best dimensions for it.

I understand the idea, it's just that seeing "Welcome to the Org, Enjoy your Spam" is ... weird.
Good idea, though.
That's just a banner to get an idea about the sizes. Should add some more options.
800x125 looks a bit wide. Here's 700x125:

You folks don't realize that the Watchtower has become my personal Spam forum.

Its normal that i see Whacker image on sig in the Watchtower.Don't worry Garcilaso. Tosa's just using Whacker's images to test the system and find the optimum size for the banners. I, think, that it will only be a temporary arrangement.

Or we're doomed :P
Sounds awesome, we could advertise many other things with this banner system, mafia games, interacte histories, and stories in the Mead Hall or AAR's!

I set that Garcilaso de la Vega el Inca.
700x125 looks to fit nicely on my browser. Any other size ideas Tosa?

I'm looking forward to the banners you're putting in the Backroom.

We've already got four banners in the Backroom.

That actually sent me looking in Adblock for things I missed, before I realised my folly. Doh! Gah!

700*125 looks ok to me, but I work in 1600*1200. It may be still too much for others. The other thing is, that the filesize will increase too. Bigger files mean that some people will get rid of them and that beast the purpose of doing this extra advertising.

What do you and the other members think?

I use 1024x768 and the 700*100 one goes off screen to the right.
560*100 is a perfect fit
Edit: Wait, I can edit in the Watchtower!?
700*100 fits perfect for me.
700x125 or 700x100 look good IMO. Either of those gets my vote.
:balloon2:
700*100's a bit long and thin, imo.
I'd say 700*125 has the proportions about right.

You have the posting rules box expanded then?

560*100 has the same proportions as 700*125.

You have the posting rules box expanded then?D'oh, didn't notice that. Scratch that, never noticed the box before. :laugh4: Once it's minimized 700*100 seems okay. I'd go with either 700*100 or 700*125 depending on other people's opinion. :2thumbsup:
Oh so that's what that was, I thought the .Org had been hacked. :laugh4:
560*100 has the same proportions as 700*125.True; but at the resolution I run, even 700*125 looks small - and speaking from a graphics perspective, I think that the other would give some much needed space.
Hello,
Thanks for all the feedback.
We'll go for 700*125, that's one that seems to work on 1024*768 screenresolution. If it turns out to cause problems for one reason or the other, it should be fairly easy to rescale it a bit quickly, while keeping the proportions.
The banners are to draw extra attention to mods/guides and need to be showed. Banners of many kb will become a burden for narrowband users and advertising will become anti-advertising. As there are 16% more pixels than in sig pics, 15 kb max should be sufficient for a good graphic?

At that size, ideally we'd want at least 100kb to play with, but I understand that if we need to deal with narrowband users, that amount on a rotation is impossible.
The only thing I could think of is somehow tieing the feature to the 'enable broadband sig' option in the profile (with a high-res and low-res version of the banners); but that may be more trouble than simply accepting the restricting size...
Hello,
100 kb is way too much for narrowbanders considering you will have many different banners (one for each mod).
There isn't an option to display high- or low res right now. So for now a choice has to be made:
-1. it's advertising for your mod and you want to reach as many people as possible. -> 700*125 @ 15 kb
-2. reach less people, only those who have BB enabled. -> 700*125 @ ? kb
-3. Settle for a smaller image, but higer quality. 100*100 @ 15 kb
-4. One static image per forum (category) for a featured mod for one week. In other words: only 1 banner per week.
-5. As 4, but maybe the code can be changed to change the content once per xx minutes.
Perhaps people can tell their choice? 5 is a maybe, so also pick another if you want that.
Out of those, I'd have to go for #1
Hello,
-1. it's advertising for your mod and you want to reach as many people as possible. -> 700*125 @ 15 kb it is then.
Do you have a mod for STW, MTW, RTW, M2TW or maybe you want to focus attention on a topic in the GameRoom or a MP tourney or any other event? Make a banner of 700*125 pixels and max 15 kb large, write a brief text for the ALT tag, together with the URL to the forum/topic and PM or e-mail it to me.
