CHANCE TO LEARN ABOUT ROMANS

09:45 - 16 July 2007

Roman fighting techniques can be learned by visitors to a museum next weekend.

To celebrate the Roman Holiday exhibition, at North Lincolnshire Museum, a fun day will be held on Saturday, also coinciding with National Archaeology Week.On this day visitors will be able to meet soldiers from the Ermine Street Guard and watch a demonstration of Roman fighting techniques.

There will also be an opportunity to make Roman pots, jewellery and mosaic pictures and visitors will be able to fire ballistas, catapult walls and dress in soldiers' uniforms.

Objects from Roman times will also be on display.

Coun Christine O'Sullivan, cabinet member for leisure, arts and culture, said: "Come and take advantage of this family, fun packed day - you will learn new facts about the life of a Roman without even realising.

"The best way to learn is to be involved and learn from practical experiences.

"This is what North Lincolnshire Museum is offering young adventurers in the area - come and enjoy the sights, smells and life of Rome."

To tie in with the exhibition, a series of lunchtime lectures will also be held starting at 1.15pm every day.

They are:

Tomorrow - Roman Introductions to Britain by Steve Thompson

Wednesday - What's for tea Lucius? Eating and drinking in Roman Lincolnshire by Ian Rowlandson

Thursday - Romantastic Metal Detected Finds by Lisa Staves

Friday - Music and Horses: The Horkstow Mosaic by Rose Nicholson.

The Roman Holiday exhibition runs until September 18.

The Ermine Street Guard are arguably the world's best amateur re-enactment group, you should definately go.

does that mean there's professional reenactment groups?

There are. They hire themselves out to do movies, documentaries, etc.

Which does of course not mean that they are better than the amateur groups when I take a look to some movies and documentations.:beam:

What is it with re-enactment groups and their fascination with segmentata...

...and supposed expertly advised historic shows that present them in republican times. :inquisitive:

I know, its really rather upsetting.

Kinda like King Arthur shows that depict all the knights of the round table in full plate mail :)

At least Plate Mail is cool enough to get the ladies of the court, while segmentata is just a pretty ugly piece of armour.

It may be a cost issue...

Yes, not just ones that hire themselves out but also ones that are set up to test theories about equipment and working methods etc.

The Ermine Street Guard are the world's longest running re-enactment group, as well as one of the biggest. Given that they represent primarily the II Avgvsta thewy are allowed to wear LS.

Many groups hire themselves. For me that does not mean that they are professionals. That would be, living from reenacting, wouldn't it? To be a professional tells not much about the quality. The best groups I know are not professionals.

Well, professionals aside or not, the Ermine Street Guard are the best by reputation. I, for one, am drooling in envy at you. You should definitely go, and get some photos, and post them here. Or we will storm your house with ram and tower and ladder and fire, and we will do nasty things to you with gladii. Seeing them life in action...

To us EB geeky fans, that's like the average teen getting front row seats to Christina Aguilera in concert. Or so I'm told...
