CHANCE TO LEARN ABOUT ROMANS
09:45 - 16 July 2007
Roman fighting techniques can be learned by visitors to a museum next weekend.
To celebrate the Roman Holiday exhibition, at North Lincolnshire Museum, a fun day will be held on Saturday, also coinciding with National Archaeology Week.On this day visitors will be able to meet soldiers from the Ermine Street Guard and watch a demonstration of Roman fighting techniques.
There will also be an opportunity to make Roman pots, jewellery and mosaic pictures and visitors will be able to fire ballistas, catapult walls and dress in soldiers' uniforms.
Objects from Roman times will also be on display.
Coun Christine O'Sullivan, cabinet member for leisure, arts and culture, said: "Come and take advantage of this family, fun packed day - you will learn new facts about the life of a Roman without even realising.
"The best way to learn is to be involved and learn from practical experiences.
"This is what North Lincolnshire Museum is offering young adventurers in the area - come and enjoy the sights, smells and life of Rome."
To tie in with the exhibition, a series of lunchtime lectures will also be held starting at 1.15pm every day.
They are:
Tomorrow - Roman Introductions to Britain by Steve Thompson
Wednesday - What's for tea Lucius? Eating and drinking in Roman Lincolnshire by Ian Rowlandson
Thursday - Romantastic Metal Detected Finds by Lisa Staves
Friday - Music and Horses: The Horkstow Mosaic by Rose Nicholson.
The Roman Holiday exhibition runs until September 18.
