View Full Version : The Five Stupidest Fatwas

Foreign Policy (http://www.foreignpolicy.com/story/cms.php?story_id=3906) has an amusing article about some of the sillier fatwas issued in the last twenty years. I knew about some of these, but Saudi Arabia’s Higher Committee for Scientific Research and Islamic Law denouncing Pokemon is news to me. Pikachu is a tool of the zionist imperialist running dogs!

I prefer sensible fatwas, like the one issue against carp (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/iraq/article1991034.ece).

Strikes me that those imams should get down off their perch, stop carping on about fish and do something about Salmon Rushdie.

I heard about the Pokemon one when it was issued. And they left out the bits about promoting "paganism." Which is somewhat valid, a lot of Pokemon are based on Shinto creatures.

On topic, I think women should keep their breasts covered when they breast-feed. Better safe than sorry.

The Fatwaa in question related to this topic was the decree that women and men could safely work together unsupervised if the woman breastfed the man a minimum of 5 times. Personally, I'm tempted to go bounce that off of our Layout Engineering supervisor, but I'm afraid I just don't have the time in my schedule for weeks of sensitivity training and giving depositions in a harrassment lawsuit.

But your comments, while not directly related, intrigues me. First, You didn't answer my question... How so, better safe than sorry? And second, I'm really not getting the polio vaccine reference (sorry, Jillian hasn't had one yet and I'm way too old to remember getting mine).

Erm, Don Corleone, Adrian was/is in full sarcasm mode. He's making fun of the stupid Fatwas in question, not supporting them.

Mind you, I like the last one...a little bit... :laugh4:
