Whom do you think the coolest, best, most interesting, or favourite, etc., etc., video game character and why?

My choice is to be Solid Snake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid_Snake). The reason..... Must I even explain?

Jon Irenicus (BG 2).

Fantastic voice acting, perfectly scripted and powered up, and makes for a plausible and fascinating villain.

Although I have to admit that the Nameless One, Guybrush Threepwood and Minsc are pretty close.

Yes, this rather absent-minded jack-of-all-tattoos is definitely way up in the running for me.

I loved Voldo from the original Soul Calibur. Kicked some serious butt with that dude. Mitsurugi was a distant second. I liked Taki and Siegfried as well.

I enjoyed the unnamed main character in Diablo. I'm also a bit partial to Mephisto from Diablo II. Marius was interesting.

Snake was cool, but a bit too Snake Pliskin-derived for me.

My top ten:

1. The King of All Cosmos
2. Naked Snake
3. The Nameless One
4. Frank West - He's covered wars, yanno?
5. Aerith Gainsborough - Because she's the only character in the game that didn't make me want me to choke them.
6. Anonymous Wei Soldier #562
7. Lady Deirdra of the Gaians
8. Gordon Freeman - Because there's something about a guy in glasses with an MIT degree and a crowbar.
9. Solid Snake
10. Anonymous Svartalf Thrall #23 - Because they drop good loot.

If you can name all the games, I'll love you forever :loveg:

Garrett is a little too mysterious to be very interesting. Would be nice if he had some sort of personality other than "STFU n00b! My money!", as is the case on mission 1 of Thief 2: The Metal Age, when he says that love gets in the way of his money.

Be that as it may but I am a rabid Thief-fanboy so I never miss a chance to praise it to heaven. What makes Garret so interesting is his place in that lovely creepy sinister world of his. He is sly, cynical and sexy but can't help being a good person, he is more or less a spectator of events yet he unwillingly shapes them. And common! How can a pupil-keeper of the ancient texts that became a Thief not be interesting??

A short google search revealed that you people indeed mean another nameless guy than I do because I actually mean the nameless hero, not the nameless one. That's probably because I never played the nameless one, the game concept doesn't look as nice to me.

So erm, yeah, the Nameless Hero it is.

As much as I love Thief (in my top three games), Garrett isn't all that interesting to me. I much prefer Zaya, an Egyptian princess turned Thief (Thief2x).

Owww she plays fanmissions, I am not alone :2thumbsup:

Just as the Thief games are amazing, so is it's mod-community. Some of the fanworks, especially the Inverted Mansion (SCARY!) and Callendra's Legacy are even better then the original missions. Have yet to play the supposedly fantastic Thief2x, boy does it sucks to be me.

Sigh......why can't all games be as good as Thief :shame:

Did I mention I like Thief?

When I'm bored, I sometimes visit the Circle of Stone and Shadow to find some fanmade missions.
I beta tested Calendra's Cistern before it was officially released. That POS turned me off completely of any future Calenda's * maps. The empty streets, Garrett going out of character, and worst of all: voice acting from Christopher Lloyd's School of Acting.
Please excuse me while I throw up.

Owww Purah. Visit another forum you probably know, ttlg (full of arrogant pricks really), and he is quite fond of himselve no? But you have admit that Calendra's Legacy is great, the city is 3 times the size of the entire deadly shadow game, and guards carrying light-sources was a great twist and a pretty neat technical achievement. If you mean that Garret having a lovelife is getting out of character, well thieves have needs to. I love the effort, if there is anything I cannot stand it's (too obvious) recycling of sounds and voices, the whole mission feels like a real commercial project. But Purah.... send him a 'I love it' mail, got a 'you should' back :laugh4:

Garrett is one of my favorites.
Dark, mysterious and smart.
Also let's not forget the guy(who's name escapes me at the moment) that you play in Mafia.

Most people seem to be thinking in terms of playable avatars, but as with the movies, I think the "character" roles are usually more memorable and interesting than the leading ones.

Five of my favorites:

(1) SHODAN from System Shock 2 - surely best villain ever?

(2) Jack from Vampires Bloodlines - his dialogue and voice acting in the tutorial was better than all of the dialogue and voice acting in most other full games. Rather impressive when he comes out of the box, too.

(3) Bastila from KOTOR1 - surely best computer "romance" ever? Sweetly flirtatious with what Evelyn Waugh described as a "batsqueak of sexuality". (Well, I guess that costume is more of an elephant roar of raging male teenage hormones, but I'm talking about the writing/acting...).

(4) Kreia from KOTOR2 - surely the most unlikely computer game character ever? A well spoken, severe, elderly female teacher. But also one of the best written and acted.

(5) Minsc from BG2 - a cartoon role, I suppose, but a glorious one.

Jet Set Willy. The King of cool. The chap doesn't even need any dialogue. Just needs to leap around a bit and tackle insane obstacles like the Banyan Tree. Contest over. Next subject.

Actually I'm surprised there's been no Zelda references, or Duke Nukem. Then again the Duke has been in hiding for years whilst suffering from 'roid rage. He doesn't deserve any credit.

I prefer the Viconia romance from BG2, myself. I had to install a lesbian mod just to get it though :sadg:

The problem with Link is that more than half of the Zelda games out there contain a completely different Link than the previous ones.

Legend of Zelda
Link's Adventure - a true sequel
Link's Awakening - a true sequel
Oracle of Ages/Seasons - ???
A Link To The Past
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask - a true sequel
Four Swords
Wind Waker
Phantom Hourglass - a true sequel
Twilight Princess

As you can see, six games have a completely different Link and/or history of Hyrule. Link would be on my list if only they kept SOME form of continuity. :annoyedg:
(I havent played Oracle of Ages/Seasons much so I don't remember if they are sequels or not)

2. Fox (LLyat Wars for both)
3. Mario (Super Smash Brothers)
4. Bloodseeker (dota [Warcraft 3]) (Strywgwr?)
5. Sacred Warrior (dota [Warcraft 3]) (Huskar)

Even if the games appeared not in proper chronological order, there is continuity in the story. I recall a time I was obsessed with finding it out together with all... "interesting" little things about the settings. I studied it, and eventually I stumbled upon some site whose address eludes me now. A most satisfactory and fascinating order it was indeed. If my memory serves me correctly, it appears OoT is supposed to be the first in the series.

Tommy, Paulie and just about every character from Mafia are all amazing, probably the closest imitation of "real-life" people I've ever seen implemented into a video game. In addition to being charming and hilarious. Very talented voice work, and love from the game makers, put into those guys.

My absolute favorite video game character though is called "The Stranger" from a video game from 1999 called Nocturne. He is an incredibly blunt, arrogant and extremely anti-social monster hunter from the 1930's and voiced by hands-down the very best voice actor I've ever heard.

Stanley Opar from Time Commando. I played this constantly when it came out and I was like young. It was simple yet difficult and I enjoyed it immensely while the graphics were decent and maybe above average back then.

Read the story in the little instruction manual included in Legend of Zelda for the NES, then play Ocarina of Time or A Link To The Past. One game has Link as a grown-up wanderer. Another has him avenging his uncles' death. Another has him a small boy set in a fae village. Heck, Twilight Princess has Link as a farmer before he becomes a hero. Except for the small bits and pieces, the Zelda series is pretty much like the Final Fantasy series, every game is different, but the same in a few areas.
Link's Adventure is a true sequel because it picks up where Legend of Zelda left off, if you read the instruction manual. Same thing with OoT/MM and WW/PH. It could be said that Link's Awakening is a sequel because it was all just a dream, but there is no mention to the previous games in the series.

Kekvit:

It is correct that they are different Links most likely and portrayed times differ a lot. But my response was more aimed at "As you can see, six games have a completely different Link and/or history of Hyrule. Link would be on my list if only they kept SOME form of continuity." Fact is there is some form of contuinity (and all Link characters happen to be (a) Link and somehow related).

The only quick link with good-looking information I found is this (http://www.zeldauniverse.net/content/view/383/421/). It is of course theory, but nevertheless plausible theory.

In no particular order:

Smiling Jack (Vampire: Bloodlines)

Half the cast of Planescape: Torment (so many great ones here - Dak'kon, Ravel, Annah, Morte, Nameless, The Transcendent One, Practical, Deionarra [sp?], Trias)

Kerghan (Arcanum)

Batlin (Ultima VII)

The Jagged Alliance mercenaries. The character casts from the Wing Commander series and from Strike Commander. Real classics.
