due to technical difficulties...

i.e. flashed my MB with the wrong bios last night so my main PC is non NF... gotta wait for a new EEPROM or new MB.

As such, cant do any "live" updates as im running on my crappy old PC now.

(Terra/Kuma - obviously a slight delay in that other stuff due to this - sorry)

PS: ANybody who knows anyway of recovering from flashing the wrong bios lemme know - but afaik the only wya is to reflash the eeprom or get a new MB

I was actually relieved to hear that Darkmoor. Not that I don't regret your problem. When I saw the topic I thought "Damn, we drove him off..."

new abit mb in the post - expensive lesson to learn @ £90 (with all the gubbinses) but c'est la vie.

Should be back up n runnin by thursday hopefully. Just updating the xp stuff on this system and latest voodoo (fan beta) drivers and see if MTW works on it... be interesting to see how it runs on an old system actually - this thing is an old p3 500 so its pretty ancient and especially with a 3dfx card in it.

Next time use that feature to first save your current BIOS to a file...

darkmoor,

before you throw that old board or chip away make sure that you did indeed mess the old one up. i thought i had done the same thing once when flashing and it took a couple power downs and ups to get the new bios to work. i forget exactly what happened but the system went into one of its safe modes and finally came back up.

you may indeed have goofed it up. i dunno, but all i'm sayin is make sure you have before you dismiss the old one. these systems do funny things at times.

also, you shldnt have to get an entirely new board. that eprom can be replaced separately normally.

K.

Darkmoor, I too once flash my BIO accidently in window mode instead of from a fresh boot from floppy. All that's need to be done is either you perform a hot-swap (I think that's what it called), basically get a compatible MB and after booting up, replace its EEPROM with yours, and program the replaced EEPROM. Now you have a properly burned EEPROM.. just transfer back to you 1st MB and boot it up.

problem is that i dont know anybody with the same mb and i can't get out the house anyway, so its easier for me to get a new mb.

GAH!

Buy new PC, toss old one out the window.

If you're lucky, you'll take some one's head off in the process AND sport a shiny new piece of hardware!

As far as I remember one of my older MB's had a feature where you could reset the BIOS in case of a bad flash update. As simple as moving a jumper. Never tried it out though.... worth checking out your MB for anything like it.....

i bwelieve that a flash update automatically stores the old bios data to a file,
the idea being you copy the file to a floppy and can then go backwards,
of course if your 'flashed' mb won't even boot past setup then is new eeprom or 'hotswap'.

Hey, I use a piii 500 with a 32 meg ge force 2 and 384 meg ram and I can run any game out on the market right now just fine. If anything holds you back it will be that card. I use xp on it as well.

That's what SHE said, Pape http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

I think the flameys are over. Maybe prune and transfer to 'Tech'.

Not much help, but after flashing my BIOS on this notebook last winter (and not having done a good backup floppy in 6 months), all I could do was boot to W95 from an old floppy, which worked - sort of - ended up sending it back to HP, who brought it back to life in WinME (minus my apps & data). Despite 4 phonecalls, they wouldn't (couldn't?) tell me what they'd done, so I could learn to DIY.

So my lessons learnt were: 1) don't flash 'til you're sure 2) partition a new machine, copying system files to a separate, untouched partition 3) do backups regularly.
