at the amazon site there is a customer review of M:TW.

He says:
absolutely amazing, July 17, 2002
Reviewer: A 12-year old gamer
ok wheh i first played shogun toatal war i didnt think there would ever be a game that could out-do it but i was very wrong and apart from deus ex 2 this is was my most eagerly awaited game, i have only had it for a few days but im already finding out the depth of the game, it has great dimplomatic effects, like if u r england sooner or later the French demand to be allowed to pass through your land to defeat the scots who have insulted them, also seiging a castle doesn't involve a small building with a few men, it mean a full castle with many walls and eveything you would expect a castle to have, it also makes the combat alot more realistic, in shogun heavy cavalry sometimes beat pikemen(yari samurai) but in this it shows realistically as you can see when ur regiments of nights are demolished by pikemen, also when u hold your cursor over the units it tells you what they would like, such as '100 archers morale :steady, happy that flanks are protected. a great gamne a must buy for all rts buyers,

The bit im interested in is:

like if u r england sooner or later the French demand to be allowed to pass through your land to defeat the scots who have insulted them

Can anyone confirm this?? Is it possible to pass through the lans of others???
I can't confirm it as I don't have the game... but in the PC Gamer preview from July's edition it says very much the same thing.

Quote From PC Gamer
The devoted have flocked to the banner of the French and almost immediately they are at Dover demanding the Freedom to march through England on this holy matter. (having earlier declared a crusade against the Scots)
If i don't let them i'll have to fight them off and gain the displeasure of the church. If i do, I lose my planned northern territory and have it filled to the brim with Johnny Foreigner. What to do?
So, i guess it looks like you can when on crusades but, only with permission from the faction controlling the territory.

Also it looks like Crusades can start wars between allied or neutral factions.

If your England and you don't let France through your lands France then supposedly attack you to get to Scotland.

So diplomacy has been stepped-up a few notches and it is looking a lot better than STW or MI.

Also on the amazon site..

"This item will be released on October 1, 2002. You may order it now and we will ship it to you when it arrives."

Is this now the generally accepted release date?

No, August 30 or around that.

DD in his forum said that you can only pass through allied sea lanes not provinces. http://www.fourbelowzero.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=14;t=000001

It would be supberb if you could.

The review looks a bit 'off' to me. It uses information that is already pretty well known for the base. Also, usually Amazon.com keeps the release date modest so that they won't have to change it everytime it changes by a day.

You can probably pass whenever you want, but its probably gonna be the decision of the ai....if possible

DD confirmed that your normal armies can only move in your own land provinces without you declaring war, unless you are helping an ally lift a siege, if you succeed the province returns to your ally.

However crusader armies are treated totally different and can march through friendly or enemy provinces as long as you have paved the way diplomaticly with each faction......How cool!!!!!!

But why do the French go on a crusade against the Scots?? Same religion, surely the Pope wouldn't allow it?!?!

hhhmmm I wonder if you can have an allied crusade against another faction. As in England France HRE and Spain against Almohads or Turks?

Would be cool.

All the wars in Europe had some sort of agenda. Catholics against Protestants, Christians against Muslims.. the lines kind of got blurred so it would be allowed to crusade against an 'enemy'. The only problem is that the pope could always excommunicate you for being a punk and crusading against the wrong people.

Maybe the scots said something to the Frenches.

As DD and CA (in interview) mentioned, you may call Crusade against any fraction, not just "historical" Crusade against Muslums. French probably launched some sort of crusade agaist Scots and England was in the way.

On DD's site it shows and describes the situation where Pope miscommunicated HRE and asked for anyone to join him in the crusade against HRE's Lorraine. So there could be different types of crusades.

id like to know how a 12-year old could of reviewed this game A WEEK AGO!

and DD said that you could travel through allied sea lanes and that you could travel through regions with the same religion during crusades. scotland is evidently either pagan or has upset the church in the early period, DD described the exact same event as the amazon review where he said that the french wanted passage through england in order to crusade against the scots.

Im probably gonna play as England either first or second, and if the scots wanna insult the French, then i say good luck to them :P

Trouble is then id have the pope on my back for giving France hassle, so maybe if i can conquer Scotland very quickly i can avoid that whole episode http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

The reason this happens is really just down to factions "needing" to capture unoccupied (rebel led) provinces.

Because Scotland (if not taken by anybody else) is rebel led ("The Scots") and is also Pagan "anybody" (catholic/muslim) can launch a crusade against it...and by crusading you aren't causing a war and can at least ASK to pass through england without interference.

Obviously if you dont have a fleet to get them there then yoou HAVE to go through Wessex->Mercia-Northumbria (the English) to get there.

Because every facton is racing to grab any rebel provinces at the start an english player that doesnt take Wales and Scotland early on is VERY VERY likely to meet this situation. Conversely if you do cpture Scotland and Wales quickly you simply wont see it at all. (if its a Muslim Jihad on its way to a Catholic or Orthodox province you have to fight it anyway)

As to the "12 year old review" - i think its just a summary of stuff read elsewhere; as the info about "having to face a crusade" isnt actually accurate, just "reasonably likely" if you dont yourself capture it (playing as the english).

Lol, i would love to see a muslim jihad travel all the way across Europe just to take little old Wales :P
