Does anyone know if we can attack and take over the Papal states? Not that I really plan on killing the Pope or anyting, that would be wrong, but if he starts telling me that I need to go on a crusade and I don't feel like it, I want to know if i can occupy the Vatican or something. Anyone know? (I'm really not going to do this, honest http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif )

Well I am guessing doing at as the Turks or Egyptians or the other nation I cant spell http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif would be the best one to do it as. If you did it as a Catholic nation would that cause massive civil unrest?

yeah the pope would most likely excommunicate you (peasants think you are going to hell basically) and follow that up with a crusade
not a good situation to find yourself in unless you ahve all your ducks in a row
But what about that whole Investiture Crisis? Gregory VII excommunicated Henry IV and after a lot of drama Henry marched into Rome and kicked Gregory VII out, that didn't cause a lot of inter-Catholic wars. It seems like you should be able to at least be able to do something.
If you are already excommunicated and you've put down all of your populations rebellions.. then what do you have to lose by walking across the Papal states.

Well you could ask for the help of the Orthodox states to kill the pope.
I think that if you are catholic and you invade their states then the pope shall send command to other catholic factions to attack you and there might be a civil war in your country, too.
You can assasinate the pope though if you like.

Yes, Vatican City is basically a building (maybe two, not sure...I do know theres a gate though, and what lies beyond there I don't know) that also doubles as its own country. It is inside of Rome, and even has its own license plates I believe, which is kinda funny. But anyways, can you assassinate the Pope? And, this is kind of a tricky question, but say you're catholic and you invade whatever place the Pope is in and he calls for a Crusade against you, can you respond and lead that crusade? I mean you are Catholic, and basically this would just result in you getting the "free province", which also doesn't make sense. Lets say someone like the Turks invade the province. You lead the resulting crusade. Usually if it succeeds, the Pope grants you this province (whatever one the Crusade was meant to go to, in this case the Pope's province). So would he grant you his province, in a way letting you control where he lives, or demand you give it back? Would the Crusade be different then?

If you attack the pope you get excommunicated. I fyou are excommunicated you cant a) start a crusade and b) any ongoing crusades are cancelled and disolved.
Having been excommunicated you can then be subject to being crusaded AGAINST by any of the other Catholic factions.
The only way to get out of being excommunicated is:
The Pope dieing (all excos are cancelled)
Killing the pope, assassinating him, trying him with an inquisitor (yes its possible) or just overunning the papal provinces and putting your own puppet pope on the seat.

Puppet Popes are essentially powerless - they cant organise or authorise crusades etc as "everybody" knows they area puppet pope. So the only thing beneficial in killing off the papacy is to get rid of any existing excommunications and to put an effective halt to crusading.
One reason why you cant play the papacy as a faction obviously - its also why the Papacy "ALWAYS" comes back sooner or later as a revolution somewhere, ya just cant kill the buggers off completely.

Hmmmmm......Tricky!
Unless you are ALL POWERFUL or consumed with a death wish I'd think that the Papal States would be the very last place to attack.
If you are a Catholic and attack you will be excommunicated and every Catholic hand will crusade against you.
If you are a Muslim and launch a Jihad then every Catholic hand will crusade against you.
Life would be hard. ( understatement )
