Gamespy......

is the devil.

(They have single-handedly ruined the new America's Army game with their disgusting monopoly over it, lording over the game with their nasty crap servers. I have NEVER had a good experience with gamespy, even the ZONE is better! gah! and those 'its cool to register gamespy' ADS ! gah!)

Gamespy makes good software (SoF2, for example) but if they don't make it in game and you have to log onto Arcade it's a nightmare. I hope it's ingame for Medieval.

Kalt - The new America's Army patch coming in soon will feature an in game browser.

So it's not like they set up a seperate room for a game? You jst get a list of all games which are hosted?

gamespy is done two ways, that i can see. sattp points this out in his posts. it can either be done by an automatic, in-game, link, directly to the appropriate game room, or through the clunky, indirect link, where you have to go log into gamespy first and then find your game within the plethora of games hosted.

in their early days of gamespy, the only choice you had was logging into gamespy first and then launching your game, but recently they've gotten a whole lot better about this IF the game company provides the link within their own game to go directly to their game rooms. this is how the recently released neverwinter nights did it, and it's the simplest, non-intrusive, way of doing it. the sign-up for that game was one of the simplest i've ever done. launch your game, click on multiplayer, register a name and pw for gamespy and head on into the multiplayer menu. very simple, very fast. so let's hope CA/Activision do the same.

the one other possibility, is that 'the all seeing eye' utility will work with mtw, which would then allow you to bypass gamespy completely, but still see all the games hosted on gamespy. it's a nice little program that i've used for wolfenstein and operation flashpoint. very slick.

and, since someone else posted this recently about stw/we/mi, Kali might also be a possibility down the road. Kali is a game hosting site, similar to, but not the same as 'the zone' or gamespy. but that prolly wont happen till the game's been out for a while.

i too used to hate gamespy as well, at least when trying to play a game, but in playing neverwinter's night on gamespy, i've come to change my mind. it's not 'in your face' the way they do it and no pop-ups and does have a game lobby where folks can chat and does have separate lobbies based on game type preferred, so i'm no longer worried about mtw being on gamespy, providing they do it like neverwinter's night did.

I've always said GS has none if very little community. However, if the Org plays it's cards right, they can maybe get GS to add a link to the site (like if you go into OFP, there's a link to the OFP site - but these links aren't always to official sites)

Maybe a possiblity?

I also use Gamespy service for neverwinter nights and I've found that the easiest way to do it is:
1)set up an IRC channel where you can set up/arrange games
2)after agreement is made someone hosts and gives his IP adress to his opponent
3)opponent uses direct connect feature in Gamespy
This way you keep the community (more or less)

Well I believe NWN isn't a great example of the Gamespy ingame software. It was annoying how it would reload EVERY TIME you quit a game and you would have to wait. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Soldier of Fortune II is the software done right and I'd like to see that in M:TW.

You needn't worry. The actual problem everyone has with Gamespy Arcade (the non-in game search engine) is that it spams you with advertisements from time to time. Gamespy is reliable, though, so it will always be around. Much better than EAPlay.
