I'm here but I have no screenies.

They also have a unit called the Golden Horde Warriors. Bow/Sword foot soldiers...
Stephen Hummell

I was wondering cause there is no screenies on them and how they will play into the game, nothin at all. Except that they are non-playable
I'm guessing they will have all new units since the ones used for STW were catered towards what was used in that game. Of course, I'm probably wrong.

Its probably likely that u will get the MHC and MLC adapted slightly, and then you will get the mercenaries again. By the time the Khanate had split up after Ghenghis Khan the more western smaller khanates probably had a lot of troops from the conquered provinces that they now ruled.

Well they won't have any of the Korean units that's for sure. I have seen Golden Horde Heavy cav, Horsearchers, aand 'warriors' listed. The Golden Horde was more than two thirds made up of conscripted conquered peoples, pressed into service during the the Russian and European campaign. This is the main reason their language was soon Turkish and their coins too

Orda, have you seen screens of the Golden Horde Warriors?
I found the mongol units dissapointing...first of all they all looked the same and secondly they fought so well you might have well thought they were some sort of immortal fantasy unit...
Stephen Hummell
07-23-2002, 22:58
Spanktopolis, hae you seen the mongol units?
Orda Khan
07-23-2002, 23:02
I agree Spanktopolis which is why I was looking forward to playing as Mongols in MTW, because they would be Mongol units not Korean. However we must not forget that the invasion force that Qubilai sent to Japan was 75% Korean and Chinese. The Mongol cav units are superb but if you find Mongol armies too superior try them on 103 mod. A little more testing I can assure you.
Stephen Hummell, sorry lists but no shots but to be honest I am not checking MTW stuff anymore I will wait til it's released

Ive seen loads of screenshots of battles, but never once (to my knowledge) seen the mongols in action :\
Kinda dissapointing, considering theyre probably everyones favourite non-playable faction, also, ive heard they only have 3 types of unit, which sounds a bit light :\
Does anyone know whether or not they actually stick around and develop the land they take over or if they just capture it and then move onto the next territory?

Units shown are the Mongol foot - (disciplined, good archers, good mellee. good morale, large shields).
Units at bottom are : Spearmen (1), Mongol Heavy Cav (2), Mongol Horse Archers (3), Mongol Infantry(2), Steppe Horsemen(2), and a unit of Naptha throwers.
Image taken during one of the Mongol historical battles.
Enjoy.

Steppe horsemen are basically mongol units except other factions can use them. Nice screenie.

Its worth pointing out the bridges also.. much wider now and far less often do they get blocked-up etc, pathing over them is much better.
You cant destroy bridges btw.

The dane unit are housecarles
And the italian foot knights are hospitallers
or teutonic knights.

I was hoping that the housecarls would look more.... I dunno........Vikingish (is that a word?).
A nice feature about weapons and armour upgrades is now you can actually see the upgrade. My uncle had a group of Saracen Infantry with no armour upgrades (they had simple, wooden shields) but when he gave 'em a upgrade, they soon possesed metal shields. Very Cool!

I know what you mean Emp., the housecarles look like peasents with a sheild and an axe.
Funky Phantom

I agree they didnt look very vikingish (great word :P), i mean they didnt even have beards for crying out loud :P
Emp. Conralius
07-29-2002, 01:06
When I pictured the ousecarls, it was of ruggedly dressed, axe-wielding, cooly helmeted, Viking warrior. Now look what we have, like Hummel said, just some peasents with axes!
I dont see the relaction between Housecarls and the game , the Housecarls were the elite troops of the Saxons until Hastings ( 1066 ) then the single soldiers were assimilated in the Norman Army but were no more Housecarls as 'units' .
And its wrong to mix Housecarls with Vikings , nothing in common , its only true that the Housecarls put an end to the last Viking invasion in 1066 too .
I dont know why the Txt in the MTW demo have this error .

Some Mongol Cavalry shots would be very much appreciated, thank you

Yes, it is a very large mistake. In the demo files, they are not even refered to as Housecarles, they are called Vikings. Though your info was informative Frantz, most of us already knew this... Here's the file's description:
Housecarle
Almost eclipsed by newer feudal fighting men, the Vikings are approaching the twilight of their glorious history. They are extremely tough, handpicked warriors whose tactical strength lies in the 'shield wall', a formation that presents a solid front to the enemy. Vikings are only truly vulnerable if they break formation.

If they arent the Danes unique unit then what is?
DarknScaly
07-29-2002, 18:41
Danes get Vikings which are very cheap and very good offensively during the early era but fade out over time as being that useful. They also get Longships which are excellent during Early-mid eras - cheap to build and +1 valour when built in Denmark.
Housecarls arent in the game.

Can you be the Mongols in the Custom Battle?
Aelfred Magna
07-30-2002, 05:03
hey Dark,
Question, do you have any idea what the Danes strengths *ARE* in the high and late periods?? It seems like everything they've got is geared towards being good in the one period in which I CAN'T PLAY THEM!! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/mad.gif
DarknScaly
07-30-2002, 16:46
Danes have it hard in Late period - they have changed/defined the aspects of some factions now that they have "Faction difficulty ratings" in the game.
So some factions are easy-hard depending on which era you play them from...but it should all balance out.
For instance faction units - Wessex is now "famous for its Cogs which are +1" - but you'll only ever see cogs towards the end of a game so up until then Wessex has no bonus troops, similarly areas which produce good gothic knights etc etc...
So Early with Danes with both Vikings and Longboats is a good start - you just have to make sure you're doing well enough to have "other normal troops" later on in the game after a running start.
So they're gunning at a (with some) different challenge per faction per Era start position.

im guessing the mongols in medieval are much like the rebels and ronin of shogun, or are they a second non-playable faction that keep you on your toes?...and i saw a reveiw of medieval, depsite my former ideas of the game....DAMN it looks pretty exciting, but shoggy's still my mistress, lol http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

How do the mongols make their entrance? Do they hold a few provinces at the start or appear from off the East end of the map as the game progresses?

They appear in the middle of the High Era (I think), and start beatng up on the Rushkies and Lithuanians.
Emp. Conralius

At one point, my uncle was playing the campaign as the HRE, and the Mongols came from the east. And by this time my uncle had most of Western Europe under his thumb (with the exception of Spain and Denmark) and the Mongols snuffed out the Byzantines, Turks, Russians, Lithuanians, and were bearing down on the Hungarians by the year 1257. Think about that now: all the eastern powers wiped out by the Golden Horde. Only the Polish ad the Egyptians stood at their borders.

Emp, are you quite sure you couldnt "borrow" your uncles beta copy of the game and perhaps distribute it to members of the board purely for testing http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
