Just recently a friend of mine got a new computer, and has decided that he now needs to catch up on years of lost gaming time, so i come to you, .org, for advice on what games he should get. He mostly enjoys FPS's, and wants the best of the best. So far he's got S.T.A.L.K.E.R and HL2, and will soon be getting BF2.

Flawed as it may be, FEAR has the best combat ever. It's also repetitive and a bit brutal at times. There are many reasons to dislike Vin Diesel, The Riddick game isn't one of them, absolute quality, nothing like it. Both should be pretty cheap now. Can't go wrong with Painkiller, also cheap, very satisfying combat and truly inspired weapons, especially the Painkiller itselve is pure genius. Great towering bosses as well, beating them is kinda zelda-esque.

3 different types of shooters, all worth it.

If he's a FPS fan, he should definitely play Far Cry as well.

Or Crysis.

Or Crysis.

Since when has that been released ?

Far Cry is just about the only 'new' fps I could recommend.

Bioshock looks nice and isn't far from being released.

Nevertheless, it is a game to be considered.

Prey is an excellent FPS, though it gets a bit less excellent in the end. It is a "love it or leave it" kinda game though, so might wanna try the demo first!

Doom 3 is also worth considering. Nothing unique, but if you play it with the lights out and the sound pumped up, its the closest you'll ever get to a haunted house in your own home.

I feel that a game of Doom helps calm down even the most unruly of people.

Seconded. Doom 3 can be lots of fun and really tense if you let yourself be immersed.

Quake 4 was also a great game IMO, worth a replay every year or so. It's short, but beautiful and a worthy successor to Quake 2.

HL2 was good fun. I don't think it's nearly as great as some would say it is, but that's just my opinion. Def. worth a shot.

Prey was decidedly mediocre, but I was really burnt out on FPS's when I got it. It is very pretty though, to be sure.

Oblivion is a good way to stress test your system, and it can be fun if you're in the mood for a fantasy FPS.

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is also another fun fantasy FPS.

C&C3 demo was also fun to play. Rough around the edges, but most demos are. I'd imagine the game itself is fun if they like RTS's.

KOTOR1 and 2 definitely. Might want to wait to play KOTOR2 until the restoration project is done.

GTR2 is a good racing sim.

Battlestations Midway is simultaneously good and a disappointment. I was hoping it'd be much more of a sim than an arcade game, BUT it was still fun to play.

Civ4 is a must.

The Warhammer 40k Dawn of War RTS. I did NOT like the two expansions honestly, but there are a good number of others here who did. At least play the original game.

Rome Total War... Figured I'd mention it anyway, if they haven't played it. Medieval 2 was a disappointment to me, but obviously many others loved it.

I dunno how old his machine was, but Jedi Outcast and Academy were also fun FPS's

Darwinia and Defcon aren't high end games but are extremely fun!

I haven't played the following, but am looking to do so in the near future when I get a new box myself:

STALKER, DiRT, Battlefield 2 and 2142, Silent Hunter 4.

Vampire Bloodlines and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II are the two games I've been most impressed with in recent years - although they are not that recent. Both are CRPGs, although Bloodlines uses the HL2 engine.

Do NOT purchase BF2142 unless you want to pay to play a BF2 mod.
There aren't as many kits (4 compared to 6), the vehicles are less useful, and Titan mode is buggy and sorta-fun.

BF2 is the only one you need.

RTS I have recently enjoyed was Company of Heroes. A +17 game, very good, nicely done.

Liked it as well, combat isn't that great, more of a first person zelda dungeon. I usually hate puzzles and generally getting stuck, but here it makes sense.

The ultimate haunted mansion experience is still the haunted mansion in Vampire: Bloodlines imo.

Fixed it for ya. But you are all wrong, the best haunted experience is the legendary Thief mission 'Return to the haunted Cathedral'. As much as I loved the game, it took me months before I finally had the stomach to play it, and only during daytime. Never before and never after did developers manage to evoke such a feeling of genuine dread, actually being in a place that is just pure evil. These things lurk there;

seeing them is scary. Hearing them is pure terror. JOIN US JOIN US NOW :skull:

Ever told you guys I like Thief?

Thanks for the list guys, i've given it to my friend and he much appreciates it.

And Marshal Murat - BF2142 was terrible, wasn't it? But that's a whole other thread we're talking about here. Maybe we should make a thread to rant about the terribleness of BF2142 in?
