Forgive me if this has been asked before, but what affects which type of bodyguard is applied to a family member or general? And more importantly how can it be controlled?

You need the Marian Reforms to have those late Bodyguards.

Woops, forgot about that, sorry. I think those are the only two requirements, though.

You only need the imperial palace indirectly. You need an imperial palace to trigger the marian reforms :smile:

Yep, but the Marian Reforms must be triggered even for the non-Roman factions to get their late bodyguards.
