Who do u think will have the most powerful army?
Who should have the most powerful army?
Russia, obviously, a mighty army led by loyal retainers and Boyars! Most skilled in h2h combat with fast steppe cavalry and I suppose cheap troops will be of better quality than their counterparts. Ranged units will, perhaps, be at some disadvantage.
and yes, this is how it should be http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

oh God, here we go again http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif I think in the Early era the Almohads are the strongest. With a rather loyal and vast empire, they are the most likely to crush the Spanish and invade France. I ususally would say that the Byzantines would be strong in the Early era, but they very spread out and lot's of their provinces are on the brink of revolt. Toward the end of the game, the Turks would have a more disciplined army than about anyonelse. And you also got the Italians and Germans, who become technilogically superior than most other actions very early into the game. Not to say that 'm underestimating the Ruskies, but when the Mongols com from te east, them and most of the otheremajor eastern factions (Byzantium, Turks, Egypt, Lithuanians, Poland, Hungary, ect...) go under. But I'm beggining to like the Castilians because of their position.
But, a lot of times in the game, you'll get totally unrealistic situations. For example, if you play the game on the "Conquer all Provinces option", you'de have the Almohads invading Ireland at some point. Imagine Jannisaries, for example, battleing Highland Clansmen. But, the alternative option, "Win by Glorious Achievements" asks for shorter gameplay.
Lets make some considerations .. France probably was the nation that performed better during that time even being beated almost everywhere ( by england and by Italians ) but they were a nation in 1500 something that Germany and Italy werent, England performed great in war but always laked money and troops to hold the conquered lands in the long run , Russia was getting an identity but very far from being influent regarding the 'big things' , Byzantium was in an irreversible decline that maybe was really impossible to stop ( thanks to the crusades too ) , Germany and Italy were the richest but never united ( almost the HRE saved germany from disgregation while the Popes destroyed italy ) ,anyway they were the engines of europe ( expecially Italy ) regarding culture and economy ,Spain was just at the beginning of the process to became the greatest nation in europe , the various Muslim states were in ( from Abbasyds to Almohads to Ottomans ) the middle of a explosion of military and cultural energy that if maybe channeled into a single nations would have made the most powerful one .

I can live with that...
Poland... often associated with the greatest minds of modern times... will prove their intellectual prowess once more by rocketting to the top of the tech tree in no time.
However, I must agree with Ryurik on this one. Russia's Red Steamroller will once again flatten all competition.
Ever notice on the map that almost all that used to be Mongol is now Russian? China has some. And Mongolia exists, but barely. The steppes are the Russian playground now. And so it will be again...
GAH!

...or just a Mongol playground...
I think the Byzantines will be very hard to stop- especially in the early period.
Its true that they were in a state of decline, but they frequently expanded and recaptured lost land. The problem was that they were then lost by incompetent generals and emperors that followed them. With a player in control the entire time they should be pretty powerful methinks.
apparently byzantine is in a very shakey position in the early era, your outlying provinces are near rebellion and your border armies are small...
The most powerful army in single player will be the one you control unless the AI has improved from STW/MTW in unit selection upgrades.
Look at the unit statistics for each faction, compare them with others.
They are generally balanced needing building upgrades to get improved/elite units at great cost.
If the AI upgrades intelligently you will face similar quality forces. The skill will be to recognise the weaknesses in each faction at the time of battle then build/organise/attack to exploit them.
The Russians may have a large map area but how many individual territories (difficult to see in the screen shots that I have). If they are small in number and large in size loose one and you will have major probs.
The startpos.txt file states the Almohads are powerful but the tone is that they need to garrison their territories, otherwise uprisings will result, Muslim/Christian changes of control as with Buddhist/Christian in STW/MTW.
To ensure that all factions are playable they have to be reasonably equal 'you' are the difference that will tip the scales.
On-line play will be down to the correct balance of units against your enemy faction and map used. (taking both players have equal experience)
Gothic Knights in the desert, not a good idea if your opponent knows their limitations.
My comments are game based not historical
Who should have the most powerful army is a difficult question.
Who had the best Heavy cavalry is easier but again but again will depend individual circumstances i.e. territory and enemies.
The Roman Empire changed its Legion structure (troop types and formations) when it encountered a different fighting style, which is one reason it was so successful.

I always thought that the faction with the best army would be the saracens or Almohads.
If they don't expand too much they will never be beaten in their homelands if you are a good general.
So I will look to play as them to start off with.
Never hear much of the Polish, perhaps they will be a clan that gets swallowed up easily and quickly by HRE and or Russia.
I hope .conan. works or a similar cheat also, would be interesting to be all the rebels put together. They would have an unstoppable army since you would never have to deal with rebellion. Mongols in the East moving West. Italians and Sicilians moving north and west. Then just have to conquer the Islamic factions. Shud be interesting whatever happens.

I would like a .province. so that you could play any single province. Hey it would be difficult and allow us to play the small non faction provinces .cymru. etc
Also if a generic set of goals based on religion was allowed then you could play any faction so a .faction. could be useful (play the golden horde and have a goal of wiping out the holy seats of Christain and Islam)
