Don't you think the Orthodox Factions should be able to have bishops? (besides the one you get in the beginning) Like maybe when a priest gets enough piety it will say "Priest appointed bishop" or Something to that effect.

I was under the impression that if you built a large enough Orthodox church, any priest you recruit there is automatically a Bishop.
Was I mistaken?

Its the same as catholics if you build up to the Cathedral then they are automatically trained as a Bishop

The way Catholic priests get promoted; a sudden piety boost (though only 1 or 2 points IIRC) and immunity from heretics is pretty cool; and then there's the big hat - a real fanny-magnet.
It's all a matter of balance. In my experience, Orthodox factions don't really need the piety boost, as their clergy are generally more potent and gain piety points quicker than the Catholics. As for the immunity, the danger of turning heretic becomes much less after 5 piety since you can generally burn the wierdos before they turn your priest.
So you're left with the big hat factor...

Actually, any priest or Imam with 5 piety or more cannot be turned to the dark side. That's when they become a jedi, so to speak.

Even with 1.2 , orthodox factions are not able to train bishops even with cathedrals and huge cathedrals (at least in my camapigns), therefore I suspect that the scripting bug hasn't been fixed yet.

This is how it works for me, but in my opinion it brings up the question of why Constantinople starts the game with a "small orthodox church." I tend to think that the Hagia Sophia, constructed in the sixth century and the largest church in the world for the entire duration of the period covered by M2TW, might be taken a little more seriously than that.

I agree, It isn't even really a balance issue for starting with that and getting bishops (If they spawned correctly) since Orthodox is the least represented faith. But on topic I never got any Bishops as the Byz despite a Cathedral.

Yeah I know. It struck me as odd too. I also wish that the Byzantines and Russians got their own church styles. Like Russians get Onion domes and the Byzantines get Hagia Sophia (domed) like churches. oh well I can dream can't I?

I've found that in any campaign I play as Russia or Byzantium, the main threat my neighbors pose to me isn't military, but religious. I'm able to defeat their armies in detail on the field, but they retaliate by sending a swarm of saintly cardinals at me, who are extremely difficult to assassinate in the early game, and can convert more in one turn than my priests can fix in ten.
Usually I'm forced to use the "surround and splat" method to deal with them, which feels like an exploit. But whatever works...
But on topic I never got any Bishops as the Byz despite a Cathedral.
Well, I may have misremembered, but I'm quite sure that with a huge cathedral I was able to pump out orthodox bishops. I'm not sure about the regular-level cathedral, though. Maybe it has to be maximized.

:embarassed: I've started doing that too. There's something very grubby about squishing a highly pious and spiritual cleric that eats away at my conscience...
However, when you move the ninth soldier in place and the cleric groans and keels over, it still makes me chuckle to watch the surrounding captains all turn to look with perfect synchronicity. Like some grisly square dance.

The key is making absolutely certain that is no hole for the enemy agent to escape through. Think of it as a square divided into nine smaller squares; you fill each of the eight around the edge before moving your ninth unit into the center and stepping on the enemy agent. If there's any hole at all, he'll escape.

Orthodox Bishops can definitely become heretics. Still once a cathedral is built they make lethal preachers.
