Does the Emperors backing have any meaningful game effect in itself?

No, not really. It just has to do with who holds a certain province the name of which I forget. Most often the Oda hold it as they are closest. You can view a very similar thread right here (http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000676.html).

The province is Yamashiro. Also Because the emperor's palace is built there, ANY type of troop built there gets a +1 honour bonus.

If I'm not mistaken, Yamashiro is owned by the Oda from the beginning, so they inherently get the Emperor's support anyway. It's kinda funny, though, when someone takes the province. I can imagine a weasely little turd looking at the faces of his invaders and saying, "OH! I guess you should be Shogun now -- don't kill me."

The province of Yamashiro is 'Ronin' at the start of the games, see Shai's Oda thread for pretty much the quickest way to take hte place, it start's off with a couple of archers and 3 monks, or something similar, so you've gotta be good or lucky to take it with ashi in a hurry, but again I'll leave that to Shai...

As Shiro says the honour bonus is the only real advantage owninng Yamashiro gives, but when Oda concentates on production of Ashi that gives two provinces that allow =1 honour Ashi, v. useful
