I've been playing some of the fan created mod scenarios for the MTW demo. As noted on Chocolate Bunny's site, some of these battles would bring a Pentium 4 to it's knees. I was able to make them more playable by proportionally changing the number of troops per unit.

Looking at the demo, I did not seen an adjustment in the options to change the max number of men per unit, which was present in Shogun. Will this option be present in the MTW retail release?

It was Piper Fubi. For those that dont know who Piper is he is Activisions Producer for MTW.

IIRC the largest size in STW was 120, but my memory is somewhat hazy, too much gaming since then http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I did some experimenting last night with one of the fan scenarios, "Oragela Colline" by Verysoon. Two sides, 16 units per side. With Verysoon's default unit sizes of 200 (a few were 180) gameplay was very jerky and unplayable. I edited the files to halve the unit sizes and found that gameplay was fine, with almost no hesitation at all; there remained a few moments in the heat of battle where rapid camera movements did cause some jerkiness, but this was minimal.

My system is Win98SE, Athlon 900, 384MB RAM, Geforce 4 Ti4400 video card running the lastest drivers. The battleground resolution was 1024x768.

I have one more question someone might be able to answer. In the single player campaigns in STW, I don't even recall having a situation where more than two opponents met on the same battlefield. Is this also going to be true for MTW, or can AI players join as allies to the human or as allies to the opposition AI player, and so increase the total number of units on the battlefield?

On Shinano I have fought repeated battles against a Hojo-Uesugi-Takeda alliance (I was Imagawa).

Yes, more than one AI faction may show up for a campaign battle. There have been many three-way battles in our testing, and I had a stunningly bloody four-way battle a couple of weeks ago.

You could conceivably find yourself in a five-way battle, or bigger, depending on how many neighbours a region has. But consider yourself truly lucky if you ever see such a thing. And if you do, be sure to save the battle replay at the end of the struggle, and post about it here to impress everyone.

BTW We deliberately took the unit size option out of the demo, partly to torment you and partly since the tutorials all use the default size. In the full game you can scale your units down to 50% of their normal size (which varies according to the unit) or up to 200% of it.

When you say 200% you mean 2* or 3* the normal size? I assume 100% bigger then normal... so you can have peasant units running around with 400 men http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/eek.gif ... need a drooling icon...

The peasant unit is normally 100 men, and can go up to 200 or down to 50. 200 is the most men you can have in any unit.
