View Full Version : Range of Celtic Slingers
I'm currently busy to change the edu a little bit according to my taste. There are not much changes however. For example I added ap feature to some mounted javelinmen (I have to test the impact to unit balance however).
One problem for me are the slingers. They already lost the ap feature (except the Balearic slingers who got a very low reach on the other hand) and now I'm considering the range of the units. How did you calculate this?
The Celtic slingers have a reach of 200 m for instance, the Sphendonetai of ~180 m. Greek and Roman slingers often used lead glandes to sling further. Did the Celts use them too? I know that great amounts of sling stones are found in Celtic hill forts but have no knowedge of lead shots. If the Celts used mostly stone projectiles I would give them less reach than the Greek slingers.

Celtic slinger are the S***!!!!! :2thumbsup: Better than any other slinger besides the Balearic (which, if I am correct, they are at par with)
Aren't the Eastern ones just as good but they have more men? It just doesn't feel right. Yesterday I had some experienced Balearic slingers and some green Celtic ones. I picked the Celtic slingers because they are far better. The extra damage of the Balearic slingers isn't worth the drop in range and ammo. The Celtic dudes rip my Balearics apart every battle, they fire over my front lines and get them. Every time I chose the Balearics over another slinger type I regret it. :(
Slingers are receiving an extensive re-statting for the next EB release. There are a NUMBER of things we didn't like about them, and they should be a lot "cleaner".

Glad you changed your mind. The effectiveness of the dirt-cheap Celtic Iosatae was bothering me too.

I recently started playing the interal version. And I can tell you, because of at least two of the changes, I'm considering going back to archers entirely. :clown:

Maybe they mean their wont be such a massive pile of dead bodies to clean up?
With the loss of the ap feature (you can calculate it easily that energy and momentum of sling shots are not far greater than that of arrows or javelins) and some changes of range the slingers are already fine for me. Just search "stone" in the edu and change the stats if you don't like the actual status, it is little work.
The elimination of ap weakens the slingers considerably of course. I feel comfortable with it because the ancient slingers were never the mass destruction weapon as they sometimes appeared in EB. The only battle where they seemed to add a decisive performance was Ecnomus 311 BC (Balearic slingers, if they used the strange 1 mnai stones I can imagine some power), as far as I know.
Because you don't blame me for my thoughts that the Celtic slingers did not use lead shot frequently, I will give them less range than the Greek ones.
