Game Refusing to load

Hello Everyone,
I have applied all updates and fixes (both permanent and temporary) and I am running version 0.81aV2 with no unofficial mods.
I am using Vista so this could be the problem right off the bat, but I kind of doubt it.

The game gets to the loading screen and crashes giving me this error message:

Script Error in data/descr_building_battle/dbb_slot_fillers.txt, at line 11 column 24

Unable to find building_battle localized string 'none'

I have tried to run the game a half dozen times now and it hasn't loaded the opening menu. I very much appreciate all the help I can get! I am so excited to play, so this not-working thing is killing me.

RTW works with Vista = EB works with Vista. Don't worry, I use Vista myself.

The very, very weird error somehow brings to mind the image of a corrupt download. Please try to uninstall, redownload and reinstall EB.

As mentioned in the installation guide, you can check whether your download is intact.

Ok so I uninstalled/reinstalled RTW and EB with all patches, etc. I checked that the download was intact (which it was) also. And then I managed yo reach the faction selection screen when I booted it up but when I tried to load a game it would send me to the load screen and then crash very quickly after that. This time there was no error message or anything. : (
Any help appreciated. You guys have been great.

You could install Filemon and use it to see what files it's accessing right before crashing.

Please also try to run vanilla RTW in the given installation to verify that that is running without problem.

Just in case, you should try the oasis temporary fix too, but I don't really think this is the problem as most have got error messages about it while you get none.

You may want to check your RAM using Memtest (google it) overnight if the game is crashing at erratic times. It will suggest solutions if there is a problem.

OK first Vanilla RTW runs fine. So does RTR (I installed it after EB wouldn't work and then uninstalled EVERYTHING and started over and same problem).
Filemon is not compatible with Vista (apparently) and so I used Process Monitor instead. Its supossed to be basically the same thing. I'll get back to that in a second. Also RAM I think is fine because EVERY other program runs great and without a hitch and also this crash isn't irratic. It is perfectly consistent. It happens midway through the loading of a new campaign with any faction. Ok so back to Process Monitor. I didn't really know what to include so I hust captured a whole bunch and then slected the last bit before and then some after the crash:

So anyway, all the RTW stuff appears to be running ok but then there is some OS glitch or something. I wouldn't really know, I'm just going off of the success verus otherwise status area. I would love a more expert opinion and a solution if possible. Thanks so much for all your time.

I didn't know that Filemon was incompatible with Vista, thanks for the tip about Process Monitor. Its output seems pretty much identical, so it's good :2thumbsup:.

So, did you try that oasis fix? The last file the game reads is the palm model, which is used in the oasis, so I think it just might work. Please try it if you haven't already!

Anyway, you should filter to only include RomeTW.exe, and only in your RTW folder (+subfolders, of course). Posting on this board, [CODE] tags will be good for the output to prevent wrapping of the lines.

OK so I reisntalled the permanent fix and the temp fix (oasis fix) and deleted the map.rwm file and still had the same issues. This is the process monitor record, filtered to be just RomeTW.exe. Sorry if I post this imporperly but I couln't quite understand the format instructions you gave me in the last post. Sorry. I am not all that good with this stuff (I have never used a program like procmon/filemon before).

And please filter to only read the RTW directory. I'm not sure if it's changed in Process Monitor, but in Filemon you find it in Options=>Filter/Highlight. Add the directory and RomeTW.exe to the includes:

And any other process that clutters it up to excludes.

As the last couple of lines are usually just RTW cleaning up after the crash, you can't see what's the problem there and you'll need to post more of it here. Say, the last 200 lines or so. Please experiment with using the CODE tag until you get it right first though, as it's a pain to read otherwise.

That's because he hasn't been filtering. Or rather has been filtering, but didn't apply the filter himself and is using a standard filter instead...

It still includes stuff under Windows rather than RTW, but it's okay though. I haven't seen that before, with water surface being the last file accessed before shutting down.

Hey wait a minute! You said earlier that you've got RTR working. But RTR installs under 1.2, doesn't it? Are you sure you've patched RTW to 1.5 before installing EB? EB won't work on 1.2.

I left them with Thread Acitivity turned on in my guide. This has the side effect of some Windows thingies creeping in; but has the added benefit of being able to see the exact moment RTW CTD's. Thread Exit, it's called IIRC.

Yeah the version isn't a problem because I COMPLETELY uninstalled, reinstalled, re-patched, RTW and applied of the permanent and temp fixes. The crash info I posted in from a clean copy. Plus I tried EB before RTR and it crashed earlier and then at the same spot (after the 2nd installation) and I just installed RTR to test in general whether or not I could get A mod to work. The EB I'm trying to fix now is either the third or fourth clean install, etc that I have tried and all but the first time I've had the same crash. It is definitely 1.5 though.

Okay, I'm running out of ideas now, sorry... But a couple of shots in the dark, all unlikely to solve the problem:

* Run in compatible mode or whatever it's called in Vista
* Rename water_surface.tga so it won't find the file and default to the vanilla one
* Upgrade your graphics driver just in case
* Close all kinds of other programs you have running, including services

BTW, how much RAM do you have?

Ok I'll try those. I have 2 Gigs of RAM. My computer shouldn't be an issue -
M2TW works great at max settings with 4x AA and 8x or more AIF @1024x768. I will try all of those suggestions though and let you know if any work. The water file seems like the best bet to me but lets see. Thanks again. Sorry this is such a pain. The help is really appreciated though.

I tried the water surface fix by 1) changing the name to nonwater... and 2) by changing the name to wtr... just to be sure the name wasn't the issue. Neither worked. Next step for me I think, unless anyone has any last minute ideas, is to by a copy of RTW vanilla GOLD so its already at 1.5 and then redownload and reinstall EB. Thanks again.

So I decided that maybe as a last resort I would buy RTW GOLD edition and Lo and behold! It worked! I guess that the patch issue was the problem all along although my previous installation of RTW read version 1.5 in the options menu time after time. Weird. Anyways I'm off to enjoy your fantastic mod and I want to say a parting thanks and farewell from this thread at least. Its sad though. I feel like we got to know each other so well. Like old war buddies or something. ; ) Thanks folks.
