View Full Version : Patching the MTW?
hi guys,
i think we all believe this game, with 100 units, wont be balanced...so it needs a patch soon....
what will CA do this time?
they have the rigths to bring own alphas?
they ask us player again to help? (btw i think that would be best)
How fast they react?
imo its very important that the patch comes very fast ...

I would say the first series of patches would be about system stability and integrity issues.
Have to play the campaigns a bit to see if there are any serious balancing issues.
Have to play MP a while to see if there are any issues there as well. Including time for someone to not only come up with a killer unit combination but the anti-killer unit combination tactic etc
In other words lets play the game for awhile before we patch it.

And looking at some of the Religous orders there is a lot of overlap in stats. Slight variations though.
Pap is right, however why wouldn't they give us the unit stats to mess around with 'same as in Mongols'?
I know this could be more harm than good, but if you want fast reactions and players helping then a private group is surely a better option than a CA job, leaves them more time to focus on what pap was talking about - stability etc...
P.S. from the look of some of the stats, the '100+' units could probably be whittled down into about the same amount of really *distinct* unit classes, therefore the balancing problems won't be soo much larger than in STW, but then on the other hand, that was never really sorted perfectly anyway - I guess its a forlorn hope to have a perfectly balanced game, but we can do our best http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

The biggest balancing is not in the numbers of the units. It is balancing the combat strength of a unit with its monetary value *and* its relative historical availability (which I think is taken into account by the number of men in a unit).
The other side of the problem is to have it accurately relate why combined arms won wars not one trick wonders. The Romans had cavalry and the Mongols had foot troops.
GAH!
To talk of patches before the release is like a chicken with no head trying to cross the road...

I think people are getting a bit ahead of themselves, all this talk of what we want to see in expansion packs\patches is a bit pointless when not one of us owns a copy of the finished game...
also patching too early would result in a flood of patches because again and again some minor issues are solved.
the patching team would constantly be working
so i say let us first play for some time and then discuss the major problems and ways to solve it before the first patches appear
edit: i also think that a patch team consisting of players or at least with some experienced players supporting the developers is a good idea

It will take time for some of the wrinkles in the ENTIRE GAME to become manifest. I wouldn't expect a patch for some time.
How can we expect CA to have any regard for player input without lots of player time with the game? How else is our credibility to be obtained?
Short of correcting catastrophic problems, a quick patch would be a lousy patch.
