View Full Version : Blood and Gore
Those who have ever played the Myth series will remember how violent it could be. As well as the reasonably entertaining gameplay, the games violence was appropriate and satisfying ( I am not a sadist, I just like Braveheart-esque battles). When I got to steamroll my first formation of peasants in the Medieval tutorial demo, I was a little disappointed to see them leave rather dull sprites on the field. It is not that I believe that the lack of violence detracts anything from the game (in fact it does nothing for the tactical aspect of it), but the lack of blood seems to leave the battlefield looking rather bare and dull (those dead horses dont look to great, especially of there are many of them in one spot). The thing about the blood in Myth that made it stand out from the dull looking sprite corpses was the fact that it was incorperated into the polygon battlefiield, creating a realistic color that was also in true 3-D. Since Myth and Total War are (or seems to be) gaphically similar, as both use a similar polygon playing field populated by sprite characters, is it possible to recreate or import the 'blood' color into Total War so that character will spill a little whenever they are hit (or a system that causes a similar effect if the amount of system resourses required will slow the game down). I know that there have to be some tech junchies on these forums as small video game cults tend to atract all manner of people (I should know, I am both an avid fan of Thief and Myth, both of which were an incredible series of games that few still care about), so come on make a patch or tell me what to edit. It would look a lot more realistic after huge melee battles and after a cannon ball just smashed itself through a regiment of men.
Given the scale of MTW, where units are only small characters in huge surrounding conflicts (unless zoomed in to max), it's unrealistic to have noticable gore. I mean, it's not as if each soldier killed is going to be hacked apart, emitting gallons of blood. Just look at the final scene of the battle of stirling (or Falkirk) in Braveheart to get the idea. Besides, like the knights fighting with lances in a melee, it's a matter of graphical simplification not to show some gore on corpses etc.

True, but the gameplay of the Myth series suffered because a "huge" force in one f the Myth scenarios would compromise of 20 units.
But I love the Myth series!

There is actually blood in the STW and MTW. It is too dark to spot it. Put the bar that appears at the end (you know the one that tells who won the battle and with how many loses) over a battle field (over some dead bodies). It lights up anything with in itself enough to see blood. I am disappointed that in the snow it is still not visible.

Blood is very visible in snow battles... one of the little bonuses.

I always liked the little stains in Shogun, understated but there. It made me want to have a tank mod so I could run down 300 warrior monks a la red alert.

Y'all are so wasteful...
Blood makes for a hearty broth that enriches head soup.

C'mon I think it's cool the way it is.If they made it more brutal the poor guys in germany will have to change the graphics as here we are as quick nervous about violence as the americans are about sex http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif

maybe sex is the answer then!
It would sell okay in Germany and would sell really well in the US too...
Of course it would change the game a bit...
