Im very excited about M:TW but after exhaustively playing the demo I have a few issues with it. Granted things can and will change in the retail version but I feel these problems are worth mentioning.
First off is the annoying pop-ups that occur during a battle. I seriously doubt they could have made these things any larger or more obtrusive! It reminds me of browsing the web with scripting enabled! I hate them! YES I enjoy knowing when a general is fleeing or has been captured but my goodness.. I have a hard enough time finding that perfect spot to click amongst trees or amidst a large battle without pop-ups taking up half the screen! This needs refinement before release.
My next problem with the game is how horrible the mouselook feels when using it for viewing the battlefield. It isnt smooth. You cant adjust the x and y axis seperately. Overall it just feels sloppy, a far cry from the precise smooth feel of a good first person shooter for example.
The final problem I have is dealing with the larger battles in some of the player mods out there. My framerate really takes a hit and it ruins the realistic feeling I get from the bruising battles and nice terrain. Im using a fairly quick system (athlon 1.4, 512ddr, Geforce3). I hope they have optimized things a good bit for release since this demo version of the code because any framelag at all ruins a game IMO.
This said, I seriously cant wait for this release. Its driving me crazy. Ive played Jaffa so many times yet seeing the hoard of horsemen coming over that hill still gives me shivers! Or the carnage of Hastings! Or or.. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif
