Exotic Pet? Anyway, I use to work at a pet store before I joined the military. We had exotics like monkeys and resptiles and such. At the end of this article the husband says, "She had a love of exotic pets" (please feel free to one-line this quote to death :beam: ) so here's my thing...
I don't think exotics should be kept by the general public. Do you agree or disagree. Yes lets discuss this and diregard that I'm posting a story about a camel trying to "hump" its owner!!! Ha!!! :laugh4:

I don't think it needs to be locked if we discuss Dave's question: Should exotic pets be kept by the general public?

Observations exclusively about carnal relations with camels and relations should be confined to the News of the Weird thread.

Wow, a thread i started not being locked?!?!?! I'm so happy, I'm going to have sex with a camel!!!

Anyway, I just don't understand the need to have a pet that is "exotic". I've just seen it too many times that these animals are not properly cared for, or in this case, properly "loved". :beam:

ohhh ok then

as to that question.....I think it depends..

I think that if the animal represents a serious risk....like if it´s a big carnivore, or if it´s poisonous, or something like that.....I think having said animals should be regulated...the possibility of an irresponsible owner handling the animal wrong an d causing serious harm to himself, the animal and others is kinda there...

but...something like a camel?

how dangerous is a camel next to any other piece of livestock? about the same as any other?

I mean....I guess a horse or a bull could do the same damage the camel did in this case.......and those 2 aren´t exotic animals.

It's not too long ago some poor guy was bitten to death by a horse over here.

Whether the pet is exotic or not shouldn't really matter if you keep it responsibly. As long as you can adequately provide for the camel's needs I see no reason to forbid owning one. Some creatures (big cats, poisonous bugs) should, perhaps, be restricted to those that have safe facilities.

I think Ronin is on to something; where do you draw the line between exotic and non-exotic? Obviously a cat is not exotic, and a tiger is exotic. But what is a tortoise? A ferret? A pot-bellied pig? A macaw?

People keep some weird pets, and some are more tame than others. I remember a big flap in NYC because Giuliani was enforcing a city-wide ferret ban. It was completely illogical, but it was pure joy watching ferret owners and Rudy go at it. Hard to say who looked sillier.

Chimpanzees are out of bounds, no matter how you look at it. They're just dangerous (http://www.injuryhelpline.com/index.rwl?category=news&section=animal+bite&article=man+mauled+in+chimpanzee+attack&id=92). Near-relatives are the worst. Gimme an animal safely unrelated to homo sapien any day.

It knocked her to the ground, lay on top of her and displayed what the police delicately described as possible mating behaviour.
Oh my.

Ferrets ftw (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=G9xHEj3Gk4Q). I suspect they were just playing with hizzonner.

That depends on what sort of exotic animal. There's the issue of wether or not they're safe to keep as pets, and some species are threatened with extinction partially because stupid tourists smuggle them back home because they think they're cute

You know, King Arthur was said to have a lot of camels. :inquisitive:

I agree with the point of view that people shouldn't have exotic animals as pets, but 1) as was pointed out, what is "exotic" and 2) what is a "pet" (as opposed to raising)?

For the easily amused, the Giuliani Ferret Tape (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqrEw901KXE).

Hmmm, interesting question. My default position on most issues like this is that people should be allowed to do something until they've shown themselves to be irresponsible.

However, when it comes to non-native species, the government can have a valid interest in restricting their importation. Many animals, if they get into the wild, can cause quite a bit of damage when they're out of their natural environment. Many species considered "exotic" are also endangered and usually obtained thru illicit means- so that would also be a no-no.
