View Full Version : Legendary battle marker (I am too dumb!)

I've been playing M2TW since release, and I just NOW :dizzy2: noticed this:
In my Russian campaign, I noticed two tiny little crossed swords near Kiev. At first I thought it was maybe a resource I had overlooked (blades? lol), then I hovered my cursor over the swords and lo behold a window popped up telling me this marks the site of a great battle (between two other factions no less).
I honestly had not noticed any of these markers before in this and other campaigns (and I don't think it was covered in the manual...dunno - it's been so long since I read it).
Truly a nice touch from CA to make the campaign (and the map) feel more fleshed out. Was this little detail in RTW as well? Can't recall...it's been 2 and a half years since I played it.
Cheers. :beam:
Yea it was in rtw and it was smarter there. In m2tw you can have famous battle after defeating peasant archers with your solo general.

I remember seeing more markers in RTW than M2, but that could be an unconscious change in my playing style. The real question is 'Are there any tangible benefits to the markers?'. For instance it would make sense that the victor from the marker would get a morale bonus when fighting on the same ground again. "We crushed our foes here once, lets do it again. Hooah!!".

Reise, I love that idea. Tangible indeed.
Likewise, if the same faction that lost that legendary battle fights near that spot, they receive a slight morale loss. :idea2:

:idea2: I'd go with a new tradeable resource - "Battle Souvenirs". I can envision a merchant opening a gift shop on the site of a famous battle, advertising for the tourists :
- "Here, have this authentic Fallen Hero's Rusty Helm, for only 20 florins ! Dried brain chunks inside !"
- "Impress your coworkers with the Mongol Skull Paperweight ! It's cheap and practical !"
- "Arrow Pierced Breastplate, with original blood splatter ! Easy to clean, your wife is gonna love it !"
:inquisitive:
Hmm, okay, maybe your morale modifier idea will work better...:burnout:

Heh... or it could go the other way; the faction on the losing side of the battle, gets a revenge-based boost in morale. "C'mon, men, it's payback time for that massacre last year!"
Since only the player's faction generates these markers, it would make the game a little more challenging... maybe put a natural brake on steamrolling the map.
P.S. I'm noticing fewer of these marker events in M2TW too, compared to RTW, but that could also be playing style like someone else mentioned. I'm trying to follow a house rule of not reloading a saved game when things go badly for my faction. So I'm a little more cautious about going into battle with understrength armies, at least in the early to midgame.

RTW had more markers indeed... but then there were more big battles there.

Non-player factions can get these markers as well. At least the rebels can. I often see sites where rebel forces have scored heroic victories over the armies of other nations. :laugh4:

Yah i've noticed that in M2TW you need to have a Heroic Victory to get a chance to get a map-marker, while in RTW i think it was also large battles over a certain number of men that got a chance to get a marker i believe.
in RTW, iirc, as long as you get 0 casualties and kill off 100% of the enemy (no matter if it was just 1 squad of 60 peasants), i think you get your heroic victory with the mark.
