View Full Version : A small online unit browser tool
Hey all,
I started this project for self entertainment and as a tool for learning some technologies I was not familiar with but I think it turned out nice and may be useful to other M2TW players.
It is a small online tool for browsing, sorting and filtering all the M2TW units. You can access the unit list directly here:
http://warlore.org/units
Depending on my availability and if there is demand from the community, there are plenty of features I can add to that: buildings, agents, factions, customized columns, comments and so on.
Currently, you can filter the units by factions, categories and classes and sort them by all currently available columns.
You can also use it to post direct links to units on the forums, etc. For example:
http://warlore.org/units/Chivalric_Knights
http://warlore.org/units/Arquebusiers
Or even custom searches like all English heavy cavalry:
http://warlore.org/units/?category=cavalry&class=heavy&faction=english
Hope you find it useful.
Cheers

When I try to do the custom search it does nothing. I'm confuesed on how to use the custom serch.
Whoa...this is something I've always dreamed of doing...

I will gladly assist you in adding more useful information to your database, now that I've seen how much more powerful it is over both the wiki format and a flash-based format.
If this could be connected to a highly sophisticated faction/building/region availability browser, that would be great.

It is working for me on both Firefox and IE so I will need your help with telling me what are you trying to do and what isn't working exactly.
Thanks.

When I try to do the custom search it does nothing. I'm confuesed on how to use the custom serch.
I will add some visible way to use it and a way to select it from the units page and paste it into forums.
But basically, there are three parameters that you can add to the units URL:
category - values can be ship, cavalry, infantry or siege
class - values can be light, heavy, missile or spear
faction - can be any of the factions
You separate parameters by "&" and values by comma ",". You can also use "!" for NOT.
So -
All missile or spear units would be - class=missile, spear
All French or English units ships - faction=english, french&category=ship
All NOT HRE units that are heavy cavalry - faction=!hre&category=cavalry&class=heavy
You get the idea.
You append it to the URL:
http://warlore.org/units?faction=!hre&category=cavalry&class=heavy
Again, if it is too complicated don't worry about it, I will just add a simple way to copy/paste it from the units page itself.

i was trying to filer only turk units so i clicked on the flags of the factions and got a popup screen with options to tick the ones i wanted.
the screen was devided into 3 parts of which the first one was the factions with all of them ticked. i selected unselect all and then ticked only turks. and clicked ok. screen showed a sort of animation showing that it was precessing and turned up the same basic screen.
hope that makes sense :) thanks

Me too. I started working on one for the original MTW many years ago but never finished it.

I actually found your wiki couple of weeks ago and were just thinking that if I discovered it earlier, I'd probably lack to motivation to start/finish Warlore because it look pretty impressive.
I am familiar with the Flash tool and it's very cool but I just had to have all the data in a table that can be filtered and sorted, you know?
I will gladly assist you in adding more useful information to your database, now that I've seen how much more powerful it is over both the wiki format and a flash-based format.
If this could be connected to a highly sophisticated faction/building/region availability browser, that would be great.
That was the ultimate goal basically, to have all the data that can be found in game, interconnected and presented in any possible way. How far I will go with it is not certain. Depends if I have the time and motivation and if there is any interest from the community. First priority would be probably to import the Kingdoms data as soon as it comes out.
Glad to see I am not the only Total War data statistics nut.

Everything you described is as expected except the part about it being the same screen - are you sure you got the exact screen and not only the units that Turks can use?
Note that it will also have other factions listed if the unit can be used by other factions - these are not Turks exclusive units but rather units that Turks can use. So you should see the Turkish faction icon on every row but may see other faction icons as well.

You wouldn't happen to have scripts blocked in your browser?
I know the page didn't work for me until I se up a temp exception in noscript ~;)

Congratulations, Barvaz !!!
Except that I can't sort units as the filters doesn't do not seem to work on my Pc, same as crpcarrot...
Real cool tool...

Actually, it was designed to also work without javascript enabled. You won't get the popups and the extra features but it should work without any problem.
I think I know what the problem was, when there was no javascript, the filter form was under the units table instead of the pupup window but clicking on the filters did nothing (but the cursor still changed). I fixed it and now it jumps to the form instead of poping it up so it should be more clear.

This is an impressive tool and a very helpful one at that. Great work on this!

Yeah, it is. Select/deselect all seem to have disappeared, though ~;)

Ohhh...ok, I think I know what it is. You are not using IE6 by any chance?
There is a stupid bug (well, many of them) in Internet Explorer 6 that prevents the filter data from being submitted properly.
I will fix this when I get home from work this evening.
Cheers,
- barvaz
PS: get a proper browser (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/) (j/k, use whatever works for you, of course)

sorry for late reply guys
barvaz
to answer an earlier question, i just tired it again and it is lisitng all units even units that have no turk icon next to them
yes i am using IE6 at work. i will try it at home tonight
@ Sapi
yes scripts are probably blocked on work pc and prob at home too (i'm very paranoid about security) but i'll try it at home on IE7 and see if there is a diff. (if my wife lets me get on the pc ;))

In IE7 and Firefox it will work with or without scripting enabled.
In IE6 it will work without scripting but with scripting, there is javascript bug that prevents the filters from working. I will fix this.
(in any case, without scripting enabled you won't get the popups, check-all checkboxes and other nice features I am adding but I am making sure the basic functionality always works with or without scripting)
- barvaz
After a long battle, IE6 bug is now fixed so the filters should be working on any of the major browsers with or without javascript enabled.
oh and...I added the ability to filter by unique faction units (units that belong to only one faction). For example, here are the unique units of my favorite faction:
http://warlore.org/units?faction=english&unique=true
