View Full Version : anything being done with the battle 'autoresolve'?
i have brought this up before, that is how I find it very difficult to do the auto resolve without getting slaughtered... is the new build (ver. 1.0?) going to address or change anything in regards to making autoresolve more of an attractive option.
or will i have to continue to use an auto-win cheat whenver i dont want to go the battlefield?
thanks for any info
Have battle difficulty at M.
I never auto-resolve a battle that has an AI general unless I have one too...
We cannot mod auto-resolve.
We cannot mod auto-resolve.
i think eb has modded autoresolve to be more difficult via the traits system, no? vanilla rtw and rtr mod had pretty good/accurate results when autoresolve was chosen. a strong army would usually beat a weaker army.

Same goes for EB...
-1 Campaign difficulty: doesn't that apply with auto-resolving instead of Battle Difficulty?
-2 Make sure to only autoresolve Captain vs. Captain battles; or battles with Generals on your side and no/weak general on the other side.
-3 Command stars are very important in auto-resolve. But they matter next to nothing when it comes to manually fighting the battles.
Campaign difficulty affects auto-resolve. That's part of why I play H/M instead of VH/M.

that is correct.
i think i'll go for H instead of VH (even though im playing with money/mercenaries script, still too many full stacks are about:no:) in my next campaign.
in my opinion, the only way to fix the auto resolve issue in EB is by relaxing the command stars traits so that they are easier to get specially that there are alot of counter command star traits in EB.
but as any EB member will tell you, look at your generals traits to determine how good he is command stars are only effect nearby units :D

Are you certain that it has so little effect on manual battles? I've played little EB, but it seems people underestimate command stars.
Well it gives a morale bonus, and our own testing indicates that there is no (or very little) bonus to attack. Morale traits do same as stars but work for the entire army, whilst stars only work in a small radius around the general. We wanted to show the difference between a general who knows what he is doing (morale traits) and a general whos bonuses come from his charisma (which is what the command stars seem to represent). We have done testing on this, and the decision was not made lightly.
Give up your love-affair with command stars, we are here for life. :beam:

A general gives a morale & combat boost to units nearby: the radius of "nearby" is determined by the amount of command stars. The strenght of the boost, too, is determined by the amount of command stars.
But.
Traits affect the whole army at a time. Hence, if your general suffers from tons of movement/campaign penalties (Starving; On his Deathbed; Extremely Unsure Troops) his command stars won't make up for it. On the other hand well suplied & confident troops can easily overcome the lack of command stars of their leader.
Since humans are generally speaking smart enough not to get slaughtered; the command stars never play a noticeable part on the battlefield. Only if your army is wavering before the AI onslaught will command stars help you, and even then, only limittedly.
Radius of effect for the morale bonus is (seems to be?) 30 m + 5 m * command + 2 m * influence.
but there is something that the EB team is missing. command stars are important whn you auto-resolve battles.
now i thought that the mod was made to satisfy every type of game play. for example i like playing the strategy map i don't really manually play the battles why should i have to suffer losing an auto-resolve whn i have a better army and a better general just cuz my family member has no command stars. i rarely if ever play out the battles i like to micro-manage the economy the raiding the buliding basicly everything but sometimes i just get my () handed to me by a 7 star enemey general with 5 or 6 units
please i beg you do something about this :D
sorry for my tone if it seems offensive i apologize i was just complaining

It would be impossible to cater for every type of gameplay, of course it would. We focus on offering indepth gameplay, based around slow turns and developing generals. Of course, we are aware of the annoyingly large number of stacks that some factions generate, and we will work on ways to limit that, but we have never focused on making auto-resolve fair.

I very often have success with auto-resolve when playing H/M and I have a stronger army. As long as the bar is 2/3 blue, I'll generally win. Once in a great while, I'll lose, but it isn't often enough to make me not auto-resolve.
If the bar is less than 2/3 blue, I'll always play them out, because you'll usually lose.
EDIT: Also, remember to save your game before a close battle, that way if you feel you lost a battle "unfairly" i.e. it was a battle you couldn't have possibly lost, you can always reload. Or you could just use the auto win cheat.
Maybe command stars affect the effect of "rally" ability...
I've never really used that. If I get a routing unit back in the fight, they'll only break again and cause more panic in my lines.

Just wondering, when a general dies, are all his relevant morale traits gone from the battlefield that instant? If so I'd have though to have seen more armies break instantly when the general dies, but I haven't really (though I haven't played in ages).

I definitely see that with AI armies...

my main question is that is there any interest among the developers to make auto-resolve fair?
the reason i say this is because the EB team has put some much effort and time into making a really nice "grand campaign" map. isnt that true? most of the improvements have been at the macro level - realistic troops, cities, wonders, cultures, buildings etc. by having an unfair auto resolve feature, it bogs down the macro campaign to a reallly slow pace and this makes the macro game suffer - perhaps fatally for some of us.
i know you can't cater to all player types but the point i want to make is that you are really penalizing the people who like to focus on grand strategy instead of the minutia of every meaningless battle.
i dont see the point of having put so much work on such a deep campaign map if the game only favors people who like to be involved in every battle.

But that's the way R:TW was made....the campaign map was almost secondary until only recently in the TW series. I still don't understand how you can have so many difficulties with auto resolve. I use it for battles sometimes (though I always play out decisive battles). Even in vanilla, if you go up against a 8 star general, it's better to fight it out.

yeah, i can see how the campaign map was secondary in the earlier series. my first entry into the TW series was R:TW and it is the campagin map has been what has kept me coming back. i guess i am in the minority in this.

I never use auto-resolve as it always results in me being annihilated.
And, its more fun to actually fight the battle.

I ... I am an EB developer, so take my opinion as a official for the moment. We've never said we wanted to neglect the battlemap game, we want to develop both areas of the game to their full potential. Sometimes this means making changes to another area, and we weigh the cost-benefit very carefully.

I do auto-resolve frequently in order to avoid being bogged down fighting dozens of minor battles each turn against ever-spawning rebels and few-unit strong enemy armies and of course I am sometimes "unfairly" defeated. However I would never complain about that, because: first - human player always has a huge an "unfair" predominance over AI (read: artificial ignorance:beam:) and second - historically the larger and more mighty an empire was the harder it was to keep order and quell rebelions. Occasional defeats from autorsolve somewhat represent this, so one can take as an addition to role-playing. After all, it is just a game and it is more thrilling not to know whether you woud win an auto-resolve or not, rather than be certain that you will crush the AI again.
I do play personally all major or strategically significant battles though.

I use auto_win if it is a battle that only and idiot could lose
I seem to remember that autoresolve results are somewhat moddable in M2TW.
I really don't know where I read this.
