View Full Version : Roleplaying Faction
I know there is a thread out about the "Funnest Faction" but I'm wondering which factions are the funnest to roleplay as and why? I've been aching to roleplay as another faction (just finished Makedonia) and I was wondering which would be really interesting. Of course, add in what you do to roleplay and what really gets you into the mood to play a certain faction.
edit: Forgot to mention why I enjoyed Makedonia so much! The roleplay aspects for Makedonia are pretty straightforward with the idea of reclaiming Alexander's empire and his body from the tomb. I only let Makedones govern the homeland states and my generals usually consisted of the other ethnicities (except for when my faction heir, Perseus, waged a 50+ year war against AS with his son har har)...but yeah, it was fun. I really felt like a large and powerful empire waging war against another super power. Lots of fun!

Any faction can be roleplayed to some extent, although I've found factions which we're traditionally more democratic i.e. had a senate or something similiar are always good. Factions like Qarthadastim, Romani, and KH aren't so much based on one family, so you can roleplay family struggles.
Then again, factions like AS and Ptolemaioi can be fun because you can try to make your dynasty last as long as possible, i.e. from father to son for 75 years or something like that.
Just my 2 cents.

yeah, I love trying to maintain my dynasty's and see if you can go longer then the true historical counter parts.
The best roleplaying experience I've had was with the Aedui.

Same here.
Why are the Aedui so good at roleplaying?

Lusitann is a good one perhaps because they only start with one province and are in deep financial trouble if you dont get rid of their armies or start conquering.
Because your fighting Tooth and Nail for supremacy in Gaul! RAWR!
....
yeah thats why i like Aedui... :laugh4:
As the Aedui you can keep the tribes somewhat separate, as they have lots of regional tribe specific units and ethnicities for FM's. Sadly when I ended the campaign the Aedui bloodline had nearly died out with only one Aedui family member from a total of about 25, but that's just my luck.
I have to say Carthage, you can always count with never ending hate against rome, supremacy in the mediterranean sea, and elephants of course, dont forget about elephants:
Aedui, Rome, KH, and Carthage I'd say are good roleplaying factions for me.
P.S. Almost forgot Baktria

I liked playing KH because I felt that I was freeing poleis from tyrranies and foreign overlords and liberating them so they would join the alliance. I tried to play each city as somewhat independent of the others, but willing to band together to fight major enemies. Certain cities in the KH formed specific functions. The Athenians and Rhodians formed the most powerful navies, Sparta often tried to keep it's interests focused in the Peloponnese, etc.
The nomadic factions were fun to play as raiders, especially once I got them powerful enough to field decent forces. It's a lot of fun to send an army riding into foreign lands, luring armies out of cities, sacking and burning settlements, and taking loot.
Rome is fun to play as interfamilial struggles, too. Adoption not only signifies familial continuity, but also the internal workings of factions. Leaders groom heirs. Certain regions become dominated by different factions. Usually, if an office calls for somebody to be sent back to Rome (historically) I send him. It's a real pain in the butt during siege, but when duty calls, my characters heed it. Therefore, I usually have a lot of guys in Rome while the cities usually govern themselves for a while. It makes the game very challenging, but it is interesting to see how to get around these problems.

Pontos reminds me of my own Homeland: being influenced by two (great) cultures / nations ... taking the best of both and mixing it with indigenous inputs, et voilĂ : you get Pontos (or my Homeland ~D ).

Nay, not from Pontos / Pontic / or whatever the correct Pontxxx is. But take a look at my "aka": the "land of the Treveri", near Augusta Treverorum, a small, but independent country in Europe.
