Either in the expansion or a new patch, I think that there should be an option where you send your battle line to a certain spot, and the units automatically attack/charge when close enough. This would really be cool if I'm doing something like attacking at an angle, then the troops attacking the enemy would do there job, and the rest of my formation would hold. Manually click each unit breaks up the entire formation too much.

Or have something where you have all your units selected as a group, then maybe have a special attack button, where if it's activated, then when you click to attack on one of the enemies units, your battle line charges into it straight on, maybe having one or two units charging it, but the rest of your line holds shape.

For better ordered formation movement (and combat), I suggest using Alt-moving in conjuction with the Pause key. Pause is helpful in planning a large-scale maneuver; you give the orders first, then unpause the game and everything starts to happen at once.

Nice idea, I never thought of it. But there is a problem though. Sometimes the enemy changes formation or spots and mixes units around, making me have to do it all over again. It's much quicker if the whole formation will move at once then do what I said above.

Also this wouldn't work in multiplayer. Thanks for the idea though.

I left it here because alot of it is stuff that can be done to at least some extent in STW now. High Voltage just needs one or two control issues explained to him about grouping and the like i think. So for the moment it stays.

Plus htis place is getting messy with closed threads, we don't want any more for a bit.

It's not a bug, it's a feature

Some good ideas here...I have wished for the ability to issue a series of orders to a unit so that we wouldn't have to micromanage too much. An example would be Cav archers (they manage to get themselves in alot of trouble)to go to a specific place (a), like a flank, open harrassing fire to draw 1 or 2 units away from main body, withdraw to point b, begin firing to continue drawing the units away from the main group, and continue on.
I find that if I am concentrating on a unit(s) activity too much that I miss the overall sense of the battle and some other opportunities that may come about because of the AIs movement(s).
Or by trying to save 1 or 2 units, lose the rest of the army.
I know that the pause button can be used...and should use it more, but it disrupts the flow of the battle and I'm running out of space around my monitor for another post-it reminder!

High Voltage,

You can group units by selecting a unit and then holding while clicking additional units. Then press 'G' to group the selected units. You can select this group thereafter by holding and clicking on any unit in the group. You can remove a unit from a group by selecting that individual unit and pressing 'G'. You usually want to remove routed units from a group.

By using groups, you can achieve something like what you want. Group some units and draw them into a line as many men deep as you want. You can move those units around as a group. Holding while clicking on the new position will keep the original facing after the unit has reached its destination. If you don't hold the formation gets altered when moving in any direction other than the direction it's facing. Rotate the formation around it's center with + right click + move the mouse around.

You can attack with this line formation by selecting the group and clicking on open ground just behind the enemy units you want to attack. If you click on an enemy unit, the whole group will converge on that unit which is not what you want. Any unopposed units in your line will proceed beyond the fighting, and you can use them to attack the enemy units from behind. You can manage several groups this way, and, if necessary, give individual unit movement commands without ungrouping. You can redraw the group whenever you want, but sometimes, later in the battle, it will not redraw correctly.

CaptMac,

If your CA are in skirmish mode, they will automatically withrdraw to a safe distance and then keep shooting. You do have to be careful that they are not attacked from the side because, in the case, they will not withdraw soon enough. You can also use waypoints by holding the key while giving move commands, but the units won't stop at each waypoint.
